Test Drive Meme 013

Welcome to our Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab some samples and start having fun!

1. Post with your character. I’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they have been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action!

Training Gym

Fight club have finally gotten a gym to train in. Train carriages make strange gyms, long narrow spaces. But this has mats, balance beams, climbing apparatus. Pads and training dummies for punching. It also has large blocks that look a little like what you might find in a children's play centre but can be used to make obstacle courses or provide cover in training exercises.

Set up a course, practice fighting or try and learn how to throw a punch! There are plenty who will help, people who take training super seriously and let's face it, people who want to ambush others from behind oversized foam blocks.

Games

For those for whom fighting is not an idea of fun, or those wanting more relaxation, the games carriage has a whole collection of different games. Board games, card games, dice games. There are many games about trains but they aren't the only type.

There are low tables in the carriage to set a game up on and plenty of beanbags and cushions to sit on. Grab a game, grab a friend or a complete stranger and get playing!

Water Maze

The latest mission has taken the voidtreckers to an underwater maze. They have been given wet suits, helmets and breathing apparatus- lightweight boxes that strap to their back, connect to their helmet and filter air from the water. A powerful and dangerous artifact has been stolen and the race is on to get it back before it is used for ill.

Team One

Plenty of monsters and foes have been sent to try and retrieve the item. Giant crabs, strange eels. Even people with fish tails and the ability to breathe underwater. All are dangerous foes and fighting underwater is difficult.

But team one are the vanguard, keeping the monster levels low to allow team two to push on through the maze.

Team Two

Hopefully team one will deal with the monsters, but the odd one might sneak through. Team two's main job is to solve the maze, because the thief is in the centre in order to perform his ritual.

It's a race against time, the maze is made of coral and walls of seaweed that are impossible to cut through. Solving it requires a quick mind and some determined swimming.

Team Three

For those not wishing to brave the water, or those whose skills lie more in helping others. The island where the artefact was stolen from needs help. The temple was ransacked and some of the islanders were injured. Help them fix their homes, put the temple back to rights, tend to the injured.

Cleaning the temple is a big job, but hopefully by the time the artefact has been retrieved it will be able to be restored to it's rightful place.

[ just to be utterly petulant and contrary, childish even, xiao xingchen does not continue training. he folds his arms and stares at xue yang with suspicion. it would be funny if their shared history were not so stained by blood and pain - well, xue yang's past and xiao xingchen's future. ]

I don't see how I make it easy for you to tease.

And yet you seemed riled by what I've said. And isn't that what the outcome of teasing is supposed to be? Which means even with barely trying I've gotten you to that point.

[Xingchen is too pure. And purity is the easiest target.]

I am not riled. [ except he is, and he seems to understand that by denying it he is merely confirming what xue yang is saying. xiao xingchen turns pink and then looks away. ]

I won't let you rile me up. Anyway, you haven't explained how you came to be here. You should be in Qinghe, under the judgement of Chifeng-zun. [ that is because you didn't ask xue yang this, xiao xingchen.... ]

[He lays down on the mats that he has camped out on and puts his hands behind his head.]

That's didn't really last very long. Besides, no matter where I was apparently I was destined to end up here.

[ xiao xingchen circles around him, looking down and suspiciously at xue yang. he's clearly looking to see if jiangzai is somewhere at hand and whether he ought to fetch shuanghua or not. ]

So, you're escaping your punishment by being here?

[He holds up both hands so that Xingchen can see they are empty with no intention of going for a weapon that he no longer has.]

I escaped that a long time ago. This place feels like a new punishment.

[ xiao xingchen scrunches his nose, distrust visible despite the lack of weapon. he knows xue yang is crafty, he does not need a sword to be trouble. and then, as if remembering he ought to be a cultivator: proper, righteous and well behaved, his expression smooths out. ]

I am sorry you escaped your punishment before, perhaps your time here will help you reflect on your crimes.

I've had plenty of time to reflect. I've been very well behaved.

[That's not completely truthful but all things considered..he's only killed one person and not hundreds.]

Really? [ the boyish, trusting tone paints again how naive xiao xingchen is - that there is the single note there of hope that xue yang may be telling the truth. a hope and innocence xue yang himself had extinguished by his own actions.

xiao xingchen remembers song lan's advice to be cautious.

or perhaps the fact that xue yang isn't actually lying is what xiao xingchen picks up on. all things considered it's more truth than lie. ] I -

So, you've merely stayed on the side without hurting others?

I only killed people who deserved it. No one here has done anything wrong to me.

[It's not like he kills for sport..not really. He kills those that have looked down on him or caused him wrong.]

[ now that makes xiao xingchen angry. the way he presses his mouth in a thin line, shoulders squared and waiting for xue yang to lash out. ]

Really? All those small clans you slaughtered when you left Nightless City? They deserved it? Who are you to judge such things, Xue Yang.

[He holds up that hand with the missing finger. He has obtained a glove thanks to someone buying it for him, so it is covered up much like it was before. He curls all the fingers down and that pink still stays up, unable to move.]

I make my own justice, Daozhang. I always have. They harm others, so they will be harmed.

You cannot be judge, jury and executioner, Xue Yang! [ his voice rises, anger colouring the edges of it. ]

[There it is..the judgement that always comes. Somehow it stings even more now that it is Xingchen that says it. Before it wouldn't bother him, but with all he knows it causes an ache to see and hear him get that mad at him. But then again..it also makes him happy because it means that he truly is alive and there above him.

He sits up finally and looks at the daozhang. He has always played the part of executioner, usually doing the dirty work of other people. It's the only thing he knows he is good at.]

That's how I was always treated, so why should anyone else get things more fairly?

[ xiao xingchen's anger is very real, very honest but also well under control unlike their last fatal meeting. he's not blind, he's not vulnerable - he stands above xue yang but he's no trying to intimidate the other with their positions.

he's just standing his ground but xue yang's reply has him feeling - well, confused. ]

Is that your excuse? You were treated badly so you murder in return?

They would just as soon step on someone and watch them writhe beneath their feet in pain. The people in those clans were doing just as many terrible things and looking down on those they didn't like. I murdered them and freed everyone they looked down on from their oppression.

[Of course that is only true of some. In other cases the Wen clan told him to find the Yin metal and so, when they didn't tell him what he wanted there was only one other option. He had been ordered to kill after all. And if he didn't then his own death would be imminent by the hands of the leader.]

I can't expect you to understand, Daozhang. Your view of the world is too pure.

[ he shakes his head: anger, disgust and disappointment warring in his eyes. ] There are laws, the world is not like that. If we took an eye for every wrong, well, there would only be blind men left.

No matter what the past was, why twist your path like this?

Because that is the only path that has been laid out for me.

[Driven by revenge, picked up by people who were motivated by selfish desires and groomed into the killer he is. He's had no other options open up to him.]

I refuse to believe that. We make our own path as much as have it set out for us. You cannot - you cannot excuse your crimes that way.

[ look, he's naive, he still... believes otherwise. ]

[Xue Yang stands up and looks up at Xingchen.]

You don't know what it's like in the real world. Those of us born on the streets aren't given a smooth road to walk on. And the path we chose is the one we need to survive. The Wen sect was where my road led to. A road covered in blood.

[ he uses the slight height advantage to look down at xue yang because now he is angry. ]

I saw what you did to the Chang Sect, I helped bury the bodies after we caught you - there were innocent people, Xue Yang. You cannot blame that on a bad road, that was an actual choice.

The Chang sect deserved what they got. Their sins outweigh their lives..a small child that just wanted a little bit of food..beaten and tossed aside twice. Run over by their wagon. If they care so little for a child that did nothing wrong to them..that did what he was told and paid the price for his sincerity..a child they crippled for life.

[His voice rises a little as his anger grows.]

Then why shouldn't I take my revenge? Their lives for my pinkie. In my heart that is a fair trade.

[ the disgusting in xiao xingchen's face deepens, it twists and turns into a moment of sheer disbelief and then he's shaking his head, fists clenched as he struggles not to grab xue yang. ]

All - all for a finger? How can — if you wanted to take revenge you could've taken a finger, even a hand - but a life? Not just one but all of them?

Xue Yang - you really are -[ xiao xingchen does not even know the word to convey the disappointment, the disgust, the anger. ] You really are -

[He laughs. Partially because this is now the second time he's had to deal with this conversation. At least this time the man doesn't have a sword. And partially because he is angry at himself that there even had to be a second time.]

Horrible? Disgusting? Cruel? I'm all of these things, Daozhang.

[And he hates himself for it, the conflict inside evident on his face.]

How can their lives even be enough for my finger? I'm also selfish and I want what I can't have. I'm not pure and good like you are. And there is nothing I can do to change any of that now.

[ unlike last time, this time he can see xue yang's face and recognise the flicker of conflict. the minute expressions that are not given away by xue yang's tone of voice.

he still wants to recoil but won't give ground to someone evil. ]

The fact you can even think such things shows how far gone you have strayed from the right path.

I will not let you do as you like in this world.
