Test Drive Meme 013

Welcome to our Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab some samples and start having fun!

1. Post with your character. I’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they have been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action!

3. Have much fun!

Happy testing!

Training Gym

Fight club have finally gotten a gym to train in. Train carriages make strange gyms, long narrow spaces. But this has mats, balance beams, climbing apparatus. Pads and training dummies for punching. It also has large blocks that look a little like what you might find in a children's play centre but can be used to make obstacle courses or provide cover in training exercises.

Set up a course, practice fighting or try and learn how to throw a punch! There are plenty who will help, people who take training super seriously and let's face it, people who want to ambush others from behind oversized foam blocks.

Games

For those for whom fighting is not an idea of fun, or those wanting more relaxation, the games carriage has a whole collection of different games. Board games, card games, dice games. There are many games about trains but they aren't the only type.

There are low tables in the carriage to set a game up on and plenty of beanbags and cushions to sit on. Grab a game, grab a friend or a complete stranger and get playing!

Water Maze

The latest mission has taken the voidtreckers to an underwater maze. They have been given wet suits, helmets and breathing apparatus- lightweight boxes that strap to their back, connect to their helmet and filter air from the water. A powerful and dangerous artifact has been stolen and the race is on to get it back before it is used for ill.

Team One

Plenty of monsters and foes have been sent to try and retrieve the item. Giant crabs, strange eels. Even people with fish tails and the ability to breathe underwater. All are dangerous foes and fighting underwater is difficult.

But team one are the vanguard, keeping the monster levels low to allow team two to push on through the maze.

Team Two

Hopefully team one will deal with the monsters, but the odd one might sneak through. Team two's main job is to solve the maze, because the thief is in the centre in order to perform his ritual.

It's a race against time, the maze is made of coral and walls of seaweed that are impossible to cut through. Solving it requires a quick mind and some determined swimming.

Team Three

For those not wishing to brave the water, or those whose skills lie more in helping others. The island where the artefact was stolen from needs help. The temple was ransacked and some of the islanders were injured. Help them fix their homes, put the temple back to rights, tend to the injured.

Cleaning the temple is a big job, but hopefully by the time the artefact has been retrieved it will be able to be restored to it's rightful place.

Rufus Shinra | Final Fantasy VII (Advent Children)

games.

Everything feels surreal, he has been feeling as if he has been living in a type of suspended reality since the moment he saw the black marks vanishing from his skin. Nothing has really sunk in yet, there hasn't been time to really wrap his mind around the last 24 hours.

Perhaps he would wake up soon and find himself back at Healen but for now, he was going to make himself comfortable on a cushion. His cane lays beside him as he crosses his legs to set the chess pieces out carefully, each one perfectly put in their proper place.

Veld had taught him to play as a child and he often played with Tseng when they could carve out bits of time to themselves when Rufus was Vice President. It had been a way to pass the time while they talked about a future that had been approaching faster than either of them expected. It had been years since he had played a game and he turns over the white king in his fingers idly. Who would dare to challenge him now?

There is a smile on his lips as he leans over to put the king in his proper place, still standing upright.

train.

Reality slowly sinks in when he wakes up the next morning. His body no feels the deep pain of Geostigma but he still feels as if he had aged more than the two years he had lost to the disease. The swaying of the train doesn't help, he's feeling a bit sick to his stomach since he hasn't eaten in at least a day. Everything is suddenly catching up to him.

There is nothing to be done about it other than pulling himself together and properly explore the train to figure his way around. It's good for him to walk more now, a relief even if he has the cane. He's decided that his strength will return soon enough.

Eventually, he finds something from the kitchen he can just grab and settles in a quiet part of the train to make notes in the journal he had been given. Observations, notes, fleeting thoughts that pass through his mind. If this was real and he was indeed on his own here than he had a lot of work to do.

interrupting your quiet, boss

[personal profile] theturksway 2020-06-15 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Yo, boss!" Reno dropped down opposite Rufus, amazed and proud to get up and out before Elena has managed to make it to the dining carriage. He hated early mornings and it'd been a while since he had bothered with one but today was a special occasion. The President of the Shinra Company was here.

Now Reno wasn't exactly thrilled by the fact that the illustrious Rufus Shinra was stuck here on the train with the rest of them--someone as smart and influential as the boss needed to be back on the Planet helping forge the future!--but since he was that meant Reno was back on duty. No more shitty vacation on a spectacularly bothersome train with a penchant for kidnapping people to do its dirty work. As nefarious as it was, Reno didn't really appreciate being on the other end of his own type of work. That, and the latest information about the train that dropped wasn't exactly the best of news.

Reno shoved all that aside as he peered across at Rufus. When Elena had arrived she had been all banged up; Reno took a moment to confirm again that Rufus wasn't sporting any injuries, sickness or otherwise. Never too careful. That and maybe Reno was still trying to get over the fact that Rufus was here.

He swiped at his hair and then immediately reserved his thinking and threw his arms back over his head and leaned back. He fidgeted. It was entirely too clear that he was trying and ten seconds away from failing at giving Rufus some peace and quiet to work in.

Make that five. "Hey, boss. How're you holding up? You got anymore questions 'bout this charlie-foxtrot?"
ambitiousblond: (26)

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-15 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Reno's question isn't merely brushed aside as if it would have been with anyone else, after everything that had happened over the last two years Rufus could give him an honest answer. He doesn't answer immediately, taking stock of how he's feeling. The pain had become a part of his life so to be suddenly free of it left him feeling exhausted and empty. It was very strange.

"I checked to see if I could find any remaining sores but they seem to be entirely gone," he remarks thoughtfully, his gaze meeting Reno's. Reno had watched him slowly die for the last two years, Rufus was going to make sure there is no uncertainty now. "I'm simply tired but that doesn't matter. I will regain my strength in time." He only glanced at the cane propped against the bench beside him before deciding that enough was said about the subject. Moving on.

"We have business to discuss. You've been here longer than I have. I want to know who else from our planet is here. If we found our way here, that means others we may not want to see could as well." He's not going to elaborate- they both knew who could show up. "We will also need allies, resources. Do either you have any materia on you?"
theturksway: (034.)

[personal profile] theturksway 2020-06-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Reno nodded in all seriousness, over exaggerating his movements as if he had to project the fact that he was actually paying close attention. Maybe he did, he usually didn't look like he was paying any attention to detail. Even when he was.

Technically, he knew Rufus knew this. He'd relied on Reno so far for getting missions complete so there had to be some level of trust between them. But for whatever reason Reno was acting strange today in his efforts to be spot on. Well, mostly. He still lounged and his suit would never be on straight and proper but his demeanor was oddly alert and (semi-)formal even if his speech patterns didn't change.

"Good to know you're all set," Reno declared and then cocked his head as he listened to Rufus give him the business part of the conversation. That was fine. Rufus was the man with the plan. And Reno didn't mind following him. He'd always done right by the Turks. That said a lot to someone like Reno.

Mission report was a go!

"Yeah, I got a Summon materia," Reno responded. "So, the deal is we only get the one thing from home when we get here, right? Well," Reno pulled out his baton and electricity crackled for a moment before he put it away. "That was my one thing. I ain't complaining because a lot of schmucks get stuck with useless shit when they arrive. But the train shop has the accessibility to pull things from our homeworlds and bring 'em here to us. That's how I got the materia."

Which meant that anyone could ask for similar objects from home. However, Reno went on to paint a clearer picture for his boss.

"Pretty sure it has to be," he stuck up one finger, "from your own world," and a second finger, "and it can't be a weapon proper. So far." His let his hand drop. "See, the way I figured that out is because the Summon I got? Completely defensive. And small to boot. So it fits on the train and it has no offensive spells whatsoever."

He had been annoyed when he had first discovered that fact but by this point he was chill about it. That, and going into the situation report had him as relaxed as could be. It felt natural, normal to be talking like this. He was doing his job; he was being a Turk again. Nothing better than that.

"I also tried to get more Shinra tech from the train last time I went shopping but it didn't like any of my suggestions. It really has a thing against weapons. But protective and curative materia can still be bought.

"Speaking of which, the girl here, the one that hung out with Avalanche back then--Yuffie Kisaragi--she's here and she has a Restore materia. Other than me and Elena, and now you, that's it from our world so far."
ambitiousblond: (12)

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"So far," he echoes but it's more of an afterthought he'll revisit later in the conversation. Right now he wants to go over their present circumstances before worrying about possibilities that may never come to reality. He needed to figure out what he was working with before he could put anything together. He had to be prepared should someone like Sephiroth or any part of him showed up.

He pushed that thought out of his mind for a bit as he returned to their more immediate circumstances.

"Yuffie? Yes, I remember her. What an interesting group we have here." He paused, idly tapping his pen against the notebook with a slight smile that lasted only a moment. "That's not much to work with but I suppose it's better than nothing. What Summon did you get?"

He would have preferred they have access to more useful materia like fire or lightning. "I want to identify allies here who may not be from our world. If it's just the four of us here it's doubtful that anyone here knows of Shinra's reputation. That makes it easier for us to gain access to information and other resources." It had been interesting to pass by people who didn't look at him twice aside from the occasional look at the cane. He was used to either having to hide his identity or remain under the protection of the Turks it was a new experience to be just another passenger.
theturksway: (069.)

[personal profile] theturksway 2020-06-19 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Reno also would have preferred a lightning materia but he would just have to make due with his Electro-Mag Rod for now. He was also disappointed he didn't get Bahamut like he wanted but he supposed beggars couldn't be choosers either. But boy did he hate being a beggar.

"Little guy's called Carbuncle. He's got Barrier magic, Haste, and a Cure-All." Reno had heard of the Summon before but never seen it in person until he got it. If nothing else it was popular with the passengers as a freakin' mascot. Tiny and cute, go figure. "I'll keep trying for more. Train's gotta give one of these days and give us useful shit. Eh, if you need anything boss..."

Reno let that one hang in the air. It was a volunteer to get Rufus whatever he might want from back home. Of course he was limited by the train's standards so no shotgun or pistol, and Reno was pretty sure Dark Nation was too large to get from the animal shop, too, so basically all the fun stuff was out. Oh well. If Rufus didn't want anything then Reno would just keep spending his points on useless shit.

"Plenty of people here who like to be friendly. Gotta say though, Yuffie will badmouth Shinra any time it gets brought up publicly. Other than that, it's been pretty nice." It was nice not to get glares and death threats (not that they really meant much to a Turk anyway) any time Reno was walking by. Yet he also missed the ease with which he could throw out the names "Turk" and "Shinra" and get a reaction like back home. It was a double-edged sword in his opinion. But for Rufus it would probably be great, Reno supposed. He'd let the boss have that for a win. "I can get you a list of people that are popular here, hold any influence, and some I'm already personally in good with."
ambitiousblond: (12)

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-19 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
He raises his eyebrows at the mention of Yuffie before flicking his fingers to the side dismissively. "There is nothing she knows that I will try to hide from anyone else. While I want us to be able to have allies here, I won't waste energy on hiding what she can disclose to others."

He wasn't concerned about Yuffie, there were others he was more concerned about showing up. He had to put together a structure of allies and resources but that would take time.

"We should keep trying for more materia. Even the non-offensive ones could possibly be put to creative uses depending on the situation. I want to be prepared as much as possible for anything we may encounter and any possible arrivals from our planet." He's not going to waste any resources on obtaining any personal possessions simply for sentimental purposes.

"That would be useful, thank you. I will use the connections you and Elena have made during your time here and go from there." It would be something to pass the time as he learned his way around at least. "Are we just stuck on this train the entire time? Where does it stop, other than the stations?

Being stuck on a train in the void wasn't exactly his idea of a second chance at life.
theturksway: (077.)

[personal profile] theturksway 2020-06-19 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't ask Reno his theory, boss, as it consisted of a purgatory like scenario where this was the way to redemption for someone like him. In other words, Reno didn't have the best opinion on why he was brought here.

"I'll try for more of my kit and some decent materia then. The fuzzball's nice and all but he can only stick around for so long. Definitely would be useful to have some Restore materia on hand so I don't have to waste time Summoning him." And he wouldn't exactly count on Yuffie to spare them the time of a Cure spell even if she were nearby when it was needed. He sorely missed Rude and his expertise with materia right about now.

He leaned back and slumped further down into his seat. "Not the entire time but might as well be three fourths of it. One day at the stations to pick up new passengers, and roughly a week of time spent on other worlds where we're expected to help out with missions.

Rufus is here.

He’s here and, more importantly, he’s been cured. The Geostigma is gone. Elena can’t quite believe it. When she had arrived, she’d still been badly injured thanks to her time with Kadaj and his merry band of psychopaths. It had taken a Cure spell and some time to recover. But Rufus...he’s fine. No bandages, no black marks.

Elena hasn’t been this happy in a long time.

True to form, she’s been following her boss around like a slightly overeager guard dog, wanting to make sure, really sure, that he’s okay. That means that when he wanders into the Game car and begins to set up the chessboard, she’s there and ready to help.

“Would you like me to play with you, sir? I’m not Tseng, obviously, but hopefully I can give you a good game.”

Truthfully, Elena hasn’t played in years; she’d been a little too busy joining the Turks, chasing AVALANCHE, and then surviving Meteor and what came after to think about games, but her father had taught both his daughters to play on a battered old set that had belonged to his dad. Elena, of course, had been obsessed with beating Emma in something, so she’d practiced every night after school and training.

With mixed results, if she’s going to be really honest with herself.

The Turk waits expectantly by Rufus’s side, waiting to see if he will allow her to join the game.

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, please join me, Elena." He gestures to the cushion opposite of him, watching her carefully. He hadn't been the only one who had survived what would have completely broken someone without their strength. Here they stood nonetheless, even if Rufus had to lean on a cane for now.

He can't fault her for watching him carefully and following closely behind him. It's a bit of normalcy in this strange world since he couldn't remember a part of his life when he was away from the Turks. And after everything the five of them had been through in the last two years alone, he can't fault her for wanting to be close to him.

"Here, you'll go first." He moves the board around so the white side was facing her. "Take your time before making your move. Consider your options." Veld had used the game to teach Rufus to think strategically, thinking things through several steps ahead while also being able to adapt when needed. He had thought it tedious then as a child but now he can't help but be grateful for those lessons.

“Yes, sir.”

Elena sits across from the President and looks down at the board. She has no doubt that she is about to lose spectacularly. She’d had some skill at this game long ago, but that was when she was still in pigtails and her primary concerns in life revolved around scoring higher on every test and doing better in every match than her older sister had done. She hadn’t played chess as a teenager because she actually enjoyed it; she just wanted to have another way in which she could beat Emma. Too bad that Emma never wanted to play after she joined the Turks.

God, so much has changed since then.

Elena takes a white pawn and makes her opening move. It’s a well known gambit, one she’d read about in a book almost ten years ago and never tried in real life.
ambitiousblond: (38)

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-16 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Rufus knows he doesn't have to tell her that he's not going to go easy on her simply because she had never played him before. Either she would win on her own merits or learn from the defeat.

His own moves were careful and precise, taking the time to think out each one. Pieces were removed in swift motions and set to the side. He's silent for a bit before speaking once more.

"How long have you been here?" She seemed fairly familiar with the train but for him he had seen her only moments before he arrived here. "I trust you have gathered information about how things work and identified potential allies."

If they had managed to find their way here then there was the potential for others such as Sephiroth to do the same. He wasn't going to let Sephiroth do to this reality, or whatever this was, what he had tried to do to their planet. History wouldn't repeat itself if he had any say it in.

[personal profile] rookiemistakes 2020-06-16 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
“Not long,” Elena admits, rolling one of Rufus’ fallen knights in her palm as she considers her next move. “Two weeks. I was incapacitated for the first couple days; when I came here my injuries from my...disagreement with Kadaj and his brothers were still fresh. Time apparently works differently here. Reno told me that I’m several days behind him in his timeline. For me, Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz are still a threat. Reno says that they’ve been neutralized. Given that you no longer seem to be experiencing the effects of the Geostigma, sir, I assume you are from a similar timeline.” She moves her bishop, threatening Rufus’s king. “Check, sir.”

There are still ways Rufus can get out of check; by moving to capture the King, Elena has left her other pieces vulnerable. She’s still impulsive, hot headed, even after more than two years as a Turk.

As for allies...

“You’ll want to talk to someone named Stark. Tony Stark. He’s the leader of the ‘train counsel,’ and seems to be what passes for the authority figure on the train.”
ambitiousblond: (26)

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-17 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Rufus sets her rook down so that he could pull up one sleeve of his coat to show her that the black sore that was there was gone now. He hadn't had the chance to check the rest of his body when he had pulled the bandages off but the pain wasn't there anymore. It had been such a constant presence for so long that now that it was gone it felt like there was a hole where it used to be.

"It seems to be gone." He can at least give her that reassurance. The last two years hadn't been easy on either of them and she had seen him practically waste away from the disease. He pulls his coat sleeve down as he made his next move. It's not something he's prepared to even consider by himself just yet, let alone discuss with anyone else even if they are one of his Turks.

He raises his eyebrows as he looks up at her, intrigued. "There is a train counsel? What exactly does it do?" He has his attention mostly on what she's telling him but he's still considering the game before him. "Who are the other members of this council?"

He sweeps up one of her pieces in his fingers in a sudden and swift movement. "And checkmate."
rookiemistakes: (huh?)

[personal profile] rookiemistakes 2020-06-17 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though Elena knows intellectually that Rufus had been cured, it’s still startling to see smooth, unblemished skin where she knows very well a mark had once been. Her eyes go wide, and she has to fight back the urge to exclaim in surprise. She can almost hear Tseng’s sharp voice in her head commanding her to calm down, though, so she does. Instead, she asks only one thing: “How?”

While Rufus contemplates his next move, Elena pulls out her notebook and flips to the page with relevant info.

“The train council...okay, here. It’s a group, elected by the other passengers, that tries to keep order on the train and handle everyone’s concerns. From what I’ve gathered, the election was some weeks before I got here. The members are...Tony Stark, President. Bucky, Curufin, Eva, Feanor, Kaiba, Nita, Nerdanel, Sarai, someone calling himself The Doctor, Ignis, and Yuffie Kisaragi from AVALANCHE.” She stumbles slightly over the elvish names, but it feels wonderful to be giving intel reports again.

“I believe their powers are actually quite limited, as there’s no evidence they have managed to communicate with whatever powers that be that operate the train.”

Rufus finally makes his move and Elena’s professional demeanor drops, just for a moment. “Wait, how did you...?!” Then she sees the wide open hole she’d left around her king in her eagerness to capture Rufus’s and groans. “...Oh, right. Excellent game, Mr. President.”

"You played well but you focused on short term advantages and left yourself open in favor of capturing my pieces. I'll show you what I mean when we play again." He was sure that they would have time on their hands with being stuck on a train hurtling through the void. For a moment he's reminded of his time under house arrest in the fortress in Junon, how the walls had felt like they were closing in on him when he wasn't allowed even set foot outside.

"How do they handle concerns if they can't communicate with whoever is responsible for all of this?" he asks, gesturing still holding one of her chess pieces in one hand. "I'm curious as to how they actually handle any real conflict. Is there a away to enforce any kind of rule structure or is it just a way of playing pretend to pass the time?"

He supposes he can't fault anyone here for doing that if there isn't much else to do. He just wanted to be prepared for what he would have to deal with here. He made a mental note of all the names she had mentioned, he would make a point of speaking to each of them in the future. "What else have you found out about the train?"
rookiemistakes: (fancy)

Elena nods. They’re stuck here for the foreseeable future; might as well make some use of it. And playing chess with her boss, while a bit stressful, certainly sounds a lot more appealing than him finding out her newfound obsession with an otherworldly children’s cartoon. (Merry Little Voidtrain forever.)

“There is a bit of communication—but it’s one-sided. There’s a suggestions box. You type something in and it’ll disappear a moment later. A generic confirmation pops up.” Elena’s job is to gather intel, but the train isn’t exactly making it easy. “I would agree with your assessment, sir. The council seems to be a way to maintain something like control in an uncontrollable situation. I haven’t seen them do much actual rule making or legislating.”

She cracks a wry grin. “We found out the other day that we’re on a rogue train,” she says, and she seems genuinely excited about it. She slides her notebook across to Rufus, showing him her transcription of the message that had popped up on the ICP before everything went to hell. “After this came up, the train shut off the translator that keeps everyone understanding each other, probably to distract us from the message. After 24 hours, it was like nothing had even happened.”

"You can't tell me everyone on this train just gets along without conflict," he remarks with amusement but he doesn't elaborate on that as he leans forward to look at what she had written in her notebook.

"A rogue train? How exciting." He picks up the notebook to read what she had transcribed, his lips pressing into a thin line as his eyes moved down the page. If this was all true and he wasn't just having some strange surreal dream again -which he still hadn't entirely ruled out yet- then this information raised several concerning questions. He's not sure what purpose it would be to operate a train in a void like this for any kind of criminal organization, it seemed like it was more trouble than it was worth.

He flips over the page to see if there is any more before he looks back at her "What are these 'void missions' this message is referring to? Have you experienced any of these?" He looks back down at the notebook to see if he can pick out any more clues.

"Where else does this train stop? Does it just stop at the station?" If they couldn't step foot out of the train than his years of house arrest being locked away in the fortress in Junon was going to become a fond memory. He inwardly shudders.

He notices the main with a cane when he enters the kitchen. Xiao Xingchen tends to notice these things, make note of them and when there are those who are vulnerable nearby. It is an ingrained habit of his hopes of always trying to help people around him.

That is why, when he gets up to fetch himself something to drink, he politely stops by Rufus. "Since I am already up, would you like me to get you something?"

Rufus pauses as he looks the other man over. He didn't seem to pose a threat but appearances could always be deceiving. But he gave a polite nod of his head, leaning on his cane slightly.

"Are you familiar with what is available here? I was just looking for something I don't have to prepare or cook." He had never even so much as heated food for himself and he didn't think that this was the time to learn. "I can get it myself, I'm not familiar with what is available though."

"Not particularly, but I can always find my way around if you want something very specific. I got up to fetch myself some tea." He looks at the cane again as if hoping to convey his meaning politely, without outright saying anything that could be misconstrued as rude or asking invasive questions.

"If you are hungry, I can see what is available and does not require any complicated instructions to make."

He notices the way that the other man inclines his head towards the cane he's still leaning on more than he likes to. "I wouldn't mind sharing your tea then."

It was risky taking food from someone he didn't know but at this point, he was hungry enough he didn't really care. Besides, someone wouldn't need to go through a lot of effort to kill him right now if they wanted to. "That would be fine, thank you."

He briefly departs to make said tea, the sound of cups and packets and the kettle and — Xiao Xingchen takes longer than he normally would at home, but he does eventually come back with two mugs, steaming.

"I find all this technology hard to adjust to."
