Test Drive Meme 013

Welcome to our Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab some samples and start having fun!

1. Post with your character. I’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they have been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action!

3. Have much fun!

Happy testing!

Training Gym

Fight club have finally gotten a gym to train in. Train carriages make strange gyms, long narrow spaces. But this has mats, balance beams, climbing apparatus. Pads and training dummies for punching. It also has large blocks that look a little like what you might find in a children's play centre but can be used to make obstacle courses or provide cover in training exercises.

Set up a course, practice fighting or try and learn how to throw a punch! There are plenty who will help, people who take training super seriously and let's face it, people who want to ambush others from behind oversized foam blocks.

Games

For those for whom fighting is not an idea of fun, or those wanting more relaxation, the games carriage has a whole collection of different games. Board games, card games, dice games. There are many games about trains but they aren't the only type.

There are low tables in the carriage to set a game up on and plenty of beanbags and cushions to sit on. Grab a game, grab a friend or a complete stranger and get playing!

Water Maze

The latest mission has taken the voidtreckers to an underwater maze. They have been given wet suits, helmets and breathing apparatus- lightweight boxes that strap to their back, connect to their helmet and filter air from the water. A powerful and dangerous artifact has been stolen and the race is on to get it back before it is used for ill.

Team One

Plenty of monsters and foes have been sent to try and retrieve the item. Giant crabs, strange eels. Even people with fish tails and the ability to breathe underwater. All are dangerous foes and fighting underwater is difficult.

But team one are the vanguard, keeping the monster levels low to allow team two to push on through the maze.

Team Two

Hopefully team one will deal with the monsters, but the odd one might sneak through. Team two's main job is to solve the maze, because the thief is in the centre in order to perform his ritual.

It's a race against time, the maze is made of coral and walls of seaweed that are impossible to cut through. Solving it requires a quick mind and some determined swimming.

Team Three

For those not wishing to brave the water, or those whose skills lie more in helping others. The island where the artefact was stolen from needs help. The temple was ransacked and some of the islanders were injured. Help them fix their homes, put the temple back to rights, tend to the injured.

Cleaning the temple is a big job, but hopefully by the time the artefact has been retrieved it will be able to be restored to it's rightful place.

Pyraxian shakes his head, collecting all the dominos he'd scattered about. "You need to deal with the ones with two heads up near the crystals. They know magic-lines games. Uncross the lines, or cross them to make specific patterns, or sound matching games." It was more interesting than he makes it sound, but he could only get so far with the Ogri'la, and they accepted his ... less than academic leanings.

Better than dealing with one of his kind that preferred just trying to kill them. "..I'm not sure the difference. Some are purple and taller, some are pale and shorter, but both had games. If you were careful approaching, they don't much like dragons."

This doesn't seem to bother him much, small things were scared of big things. "But once they calm down there's fun ones. They have a small launcher thing that flings clay off the cliffs in various shapes and you shoot them down. They use magic or bows, I don't." He had FIRE. "The smaller elves would make balls out of magic and toss them around but if it hit the ground it'd blow up. Or hide runes behind a blank shape and then you'd have to try to match them, the first one to get them all wins." He wasn't good at that one. "And of course races of all kinds. On foot. In a biped shape. Flying. Carrying things. Carrying things while carrying an elf, and someone else is also carrying an elf and they shoot at each other.. and you.."

Oh, right, that thing. Mirele is still getting used to so much, one could hardly blame him for forgetting. ...no, well, they could blame him, but it would be kind of rude. "You're very calm about this. Not in a bad way, it just...feels like with all the unknowns, it's hard to just wait here." (But who is he kidding, he would've been even more useless underwater. A hindrance, even.)

It will probably seem out of nowhere to Mirele's cleaning buddy, but after a few more seconds of pushing rocks aside with the broom, he speaks up again. "Actually, where I'm from, people try to spend as little time in the ocean water as possible. Even in boats. It's said to be...impolite, maybe? Or intrusive-- to the gods that live at the bottom of the ocean. So even a day or two is...would be difficult to want to do."

"One could say I am used to things occurring slower than I would like," Webmind replies, downplaying how he feels. "Long before void travel came into the picture."

Webmind does look intrigued - if surprised - at the tangent, saying, "That is a matter of cultural norms; such can differ quite sharply from place to place. That doesn't make anything wrong about it; your beliefs, or theirs."

Even if the distinctions didn't always make sense to Webmind; he was no religious sort, but neither did he mean offense.

"Oh, it's...nice to meet you." The hesitation is more awkwardness and a bit of awe than distaste or anything like that, and it's relatively obvious in his tone. An elf...is not something-- someone-- Mirele has ever heard of. And he's been around for a long time. But he's also not been to many places, so it's probably his fault. "I've never known an elf before," he muses. "But I also didn't do much traveling, so it could be that I just...missed out?" Though, he feels like another humanlike species would be something that he'd at least have heard about. "Same with the other types, it's all-- it's not that it doesn't mean anything to me, but more that I've never heard of you before." For now, he will very strongly hope that he didn't come off as incredibly offensive.

"Oh, right-- I'm not, also. Human, that is." In case that part needs clarifying. "That's...why I was interested." Mirele is beginning to have the sneaking suspicion that later, he will look back on this conversation and want to drown himself out of sheer embarrassment.

The Bananagrams have been all but forgotten about, even though he's still holding the pouch. Somehow, he has also forgotten to mention his name.

"So you're just...used to having to be patient?" It does make sense, but he's also not sure that it'd be easy, or possible, for time to go faster than it is. Or maybe it is possible, someone here is bound to have powers like that. "That doesn't annoy you?" Or if it does, he just doesn't show it.

He does seem awfully level-headed, though. Or maybe just not really having beliefs of his own? Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that. "I didn't think it's a bad thing to believe it, but...I guess I'm still getting used to all of this. The meeting different kinds of people from all these different places, with different rules or laws, and...what you said, norms, and then it makes me think, if I was from one of those different places instead, maybe I would have learned to swim in the ocean or the gods I'm used to would be completely different and--" He pauses to breathe. Air is good. Air is necessary. "I guess I could be helping out more than I am now. That's probably what this all leads to." He's not sure why he's saying all of this, maybe it's just that someone is listening. "Do you ever think about things like that?"
ambitiousblond: (12)

[personal profile] ambitiousblond 2020-06-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"So far," he echoes but it's more of an afterthought he'll revisit later in the conversation. Right now he wants to go over their present circumstances before worrying about possibilities that may never come to reality. He needed to figure out what he was working with before he could put anything together. He had to be prepared should someone like Sephiroth or any part of him showed up.

He pushed that thought out of his mind for a bit as he returned to their more immediate circumstances.

"Yuffie? Yes, I remember her. What an interesting group we have here." He paused, idly tapping his pen against the notebook with a slight smile that lasted only a moment. "That's not much to work with but I suppose it's better than nothing. What Summon did you get?"

He would have preferred they have access to more useful materia like fire or lightning. "I want to identify allies here who may not be from our world. If it's just the four of us here it's doubtful that anyone here knows of Shinra's reputation. That makes it easier for us to gain access to information and other resources." It had been interesting to pass by people who didn't look at him twice aside from the occasional look at the cane. He was used to either having to hide his identity or remain under the protection of the Turks it was a new experience to be just another passenger.

"The annoyance is there," Webmind admits, "But I have also had extensive practice not taking that out on other people. It isn't their fault, after all."

Differing perceptions of time just happened. Chalk it up to evolution if you have to.

Webmind looks askance at Mirele, mentally reviewing how to talk someone down from hyperventilating - usually he's the one speaking that fast - but the man recovers, so with a nod he replies,

"Quite often, as a matter of course. There are an infinite amount of what-ifs in the worlds, and even the amount that we can think of at any one time can feel infinite."

He stops moving the rag for a moment to shrug. "But all of those things do not mean that what we are doing isn't important, either to our fellow Voidtreckers or to these people."

And sometimes, that was enough.

Practice? At regulating emotions? "Where do you go to get practice like that?" And then he kind of thinks, 'Maybe from actually talking to other people, and it comes naturally from that,' but doesn't verbally correct himself just in case there is a place to go to learn.

"...you have a point, I think. Or a few points," he admits, a moment later. "It's just that I didn't think a lot about it before--" (No, it's that he tried not to think about it, and pushed every what-if out of consciousness because it was too easy to just sink into it like wet sand.) "--but being around other people just...makes it easy to think about all kinds of new things." It's not a particularly wise comment-- if anything, it's just plain obvious-- but he feels like he's discovering a lot. "Ah-- thank you for listening, by the way. And being encouraging..."

"By practice I mean experience, naturally," Webmind says, not intentionally following Mirele's line of thought.

"Though reading archives of others' interactions and seeing what happens when they lose their tempers at each other is also educational."

Webmind flashes a winking emoticon, doing his best to be reassuring.

"I assure you it is no problem. I am happy to listen, and provide guidance where I can."

He returns to the cleaning motions - he's going to need a ladder soon, though!

"It is something I felt I had little ability to provide, when I first arrived on a void platform; my world had no proven magic or gods to begin with, let alone well-established space travel. I thought myself quite out of my league - but some things will always be important."

Like conscientiousness, and compassion.

"It may be that I am not from your world. The reason why you have not heard of my kind." Maebhrin could not blame him for that, after all. "It is called Aebrynis. From what I understand, it is more than a bit of a backwater..."

But she shrugged then. It's clear by his face and his movements that he's just unused to talking to people, and Mae can't find offense in that. She tries, but she could be just as awkward--especially when he mentions that he's not human. Her brows fly up. "You certainly look human--if you are not, then what are you?" Blurting that out as if she had no brain to mouth filter at all. As if her mother had never attempted once to teach her diplomacy.

At least then she remembers that her mother did try that, and coughs a little, cheeks going pink. "Ahm. My name is Maebhrin Tillinath, may I have your name?"

Oh. So it was just that. "If nothing else, it seems like I'll have an awful lot of time-- and chances-- to practice, just being here. Give it a few decades, and even I'll be an expert." It's not sarcastic so much as dry, or at least that's how he intends it to come off.

"It kind of sounds like you have a reason for being here, though. Even if it wasn't what you expected at first. I mean, it's not like I believe that everything has a reason for happening, but...I think I'd be happy, if it turned out that I was good at being helpful in the way you are. And like you said, no matter who it is, everyone needs someone to be...just nice to them, sooner or later."

[Sera is more hot-tempered, and Ran can tell she's getting irritated. Ran can't exactly blame her -- it feels like they're going in circles and it's frustrating, especially knowing that there's a time limit and their own wits are between them and their goal.]

There has to be a better way. We know it has an end, so there has to be a solution. [Her head tilts a little, looking back towards the way they came.] I think I remember where the beginning is? I remember something about if you start at the beginning with your hand along one wall and follow it, you'll find a way out.

If we had something to mark with, that might help too. We could mark any dead ends so we don't waste time with them again.

Team Three
There's a girl crouched on the sand next to the water.

Just squatting there at the water's edge, arms crossed as she leans on her knees. The waves wash in close to her toes.

She's been there for a good twenty minutes.

Sulking?

Possibly.

Games
The girl perched on the floor is obviously blind. Her eyes don't focus on anything as she feels for what games are available, her short, rough fingers gliding over board games, card games . . .

Ah, dice. These seem to be at least a little familiar; she cups them in her hand, rattling them on her palm.

"Want to play?" she offers the nearest person. "At least I know this one."

She's blind. It won't be much of a challenge, right?

'Backwater' is a new word to him, but he will file that one away for later to ask or look up or something. Maybe it just means far away? If she's from a whole different world, then that would certainly be quite a distance...

Okay. He's getting off-track. Questions will be answered in order of simplicity of the answer, easiest first. Kind of...trying to match her level of politeness-- "My name's Mirele. Mirele Weston," he starts, pretty good, and then veers off-course while trying to formulate an answer to the other question. "But you don't need to use my surname, just Mirele is fine, unless there's someone else with my name here. And, I used to be human, so you're not wrong about that, but...if you are from a different world, it's probably-- it's probably such a long story, and...I don't really know what you'd call me. I don't know what I'd call me. I'm not really a person, and I'm not really a god, which is what I'm-- supposed to be, so maybe I'm just...me?"

A few of the tiles escape the open Bananagrams pouch in his hands, and he realizes that he's been absently fiddling with it, nervously. "Sorry."

She hesitates a bit. "...I'm not really sure," she admits. "People have gotten off the train, but it...doesn't happen often. I've heard there have been people who disappear, but it's...not clear where they go. It's assumed that at least some of them go home, but we can never know for sure."

Poker was a lot less stressful when it wasn't for money. And also when she wasn't playing her coworkers. Somehow, she always seemed to lose. And this guy looked pretty confident.

But her hand was pretty good. Maybe she could push it a LITTLE furhter.

"Raise three more beans."

That was half her total jelly beans (She'd have more if she stopped snacking on them, but no point worrying about that now).

Rufus sets her rook down so that he could pull up one sleeve of his coat to show her that the black sore that was there was gone now. He hadn't had the chance to check the rest of his body when he had pulled the bandages off but the pain wasn't there anymore. It had been such a constant presence for so long that now that it was gone it felt like there was a hole where it used to be.

"It seems to be gone." He can at least give her that reassurance. The last two years hadn't been easy on either of them and she had seen him practically waste away from the disease. He pulls his coat sleeve down as he made his next move. It's not something he's prepared to even consider by himself just yet, let alone discuss with anyone else even if they are one of his Turks.

He raises his eyebrows as he looks up at her, intrigued. "There is a train counsel? What exactly does it do?" He has his attention mostly on what she's telling him but he's still considering the game before him. "Who are the other members of this council?"

He sweeps up one of her pieces in his fingers in a sudden and swift movement. "And checkmate."

With only one of them heading at him, he was able to turn and deal with it. "Time to tip the scales," he said and the fish started to list as the scales on one side grew heavier than the scales on the other side. "Hey! this is easy! It is child's filet!" and then the fish was, well.. sliced up. That one dead he turned back to help the boy.

"Hey, share the battle, don't be so shellfish!" he called, drawing the crab's attention. "Are the swords so effective? Maybe we should be shelling these monsters..." he said as dead crabs began slamming down on the monster, dragging it down.

Cool! That worked. For now anyway. He gave the boy a thumbs up.
