Test Drive Meme 016

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.

3. Have lots of fun. Mandatory, mod-sanctioned fun.

Happy testing!

Silence in the Library

The library is a double carriage. Downstairs is brightly-coloured, with cover posters across the walls, tables and chairs in the strong colours of the team uniforms, and a wooden model train placed as though winding its way through the carriage with carriages of shelves in tow. The walls are shelving, and beanbags litter the floor. Upstairs is quieter, rows of nonfiction shelves with private desks at the end of each row; the sound up here is muffled.

You don't know who, you don't know why, but someone or something has had a bad power day. How do you know? Well, the fact that the characters of any book you read keep coming to life as tiny versions of themselves and running riot around the carriage... that might have been a clue.

You just wish you'd picked a different book before realising it.

An Apple a Day

Medical is another double carriage, though it boasts one of the few person-sized lifts on the train as well as stairs. On the bottom floor, two of the three rooms are examination rooms, with simple beds, equipment and first-aid capacity. The third is a surgical bay, albeit a simpler one than some passengers may anticipate. All three rooms have ICPs with instructions and manuals for all equipment and a number of medical procedures.

Upstairs, there are four private recovery rooms, with a medical bed and an accessible en-suite. It's possible to check a passenger into one of these rooms, at which point they cannot leave until discharged by the person who checked them in.

Which, unfortunately, you are entirely aware of. You've been here for three days, and you're climbing the walls. But that'll teach you to get injured in such a stupid way. Or so they hope.

Sprockets and Skysong

In which a train arrives among the smokestacks of Little Underpool with some unexpected visitors.

Little Underpool is a township on Void world #30630687444. Caught up in the middle of what appears to be a series of industrial revolutions, the world is in a state of constant, chaotic innovation. Currently, that means that there is a power struggle going on between the skywhaling megacorporation Scrimshaw Inc and the Zephyr Company, an airship manufacturer, over control of the skies above Underpool, and the rapidly diminishing population of skywhales, whose bones are used in most modern airships, and whose blood is a key fuel source for a great number of new devices and engines. The voidtreckers are, this mission, to rescue the whales, rather than any humanoids.

Team One

Infiltrating Scrimshaw Inc, this team's job is to sabotage the tracking drones used to locate the whale pods, to allow the great beasts to migrate successfully away from Underpool. The offices of the corporation are in a series of spiralling brass and bone towers in the centre of the town, connected by exposed cable bridges that run to dizzying heights. Their clockwork guards are numerous, but often faulty, and highly vulnerable to tinkering.

Team Two

This team's job is to hijack some of the Zephyr Company's airships, and use them to defend the whale pods closest to Underpool. Several pods contain whale calves, and cannot evacuate as fast as the larger bachelor groups. The airships are light, and handle well, but their oddly organic design can be rather unsettling. The primary weapons are harpoons and short-range bomb slings, both as deadly against other airships as they are against their original targets.

Team Three

The final team's task is less direct - they must go among the populace of Underpool and spread unrest, redirecting the attention of the people towards the plight of their nonhuman neighbours in the sky, and the wrongdoings of their resident megacorporations. The people are not aware that the whales are an entirely sentient species, which appears to be a deliberate obfuscation by the town's council and sponsors. Your job is to change that.

[Oh! So there was someone there. Guilmon is just going to put his face down very close to the smaller digimon and sniff at him.

This is how you make friends, right?]

Uuu....

[ Wormmon shuts his eyes. But no chomping? Is happening?

He takes a peek with one eye. Then with the other. Then with both.

....

Attempting a friendly overture, he gives Guilmon a tentative, one-nub nose boop.

Ken watches and waits. He believes in his partner. ]

Guilmon immediately pulls his head back and giggles.

"Hi! I knew there was another digimon here!"

Behind him Takato finally laughs and relaxes. He still didn't recognize Ken. But... if he had a partner he must be from one of those other worlds.

"Sorry, I didn't know anyone else was here. Have you been partners long?"
ramengroupie: (object)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
No recognition, after all...Well, Ken can't say that's surprising.

"I suppose."

How to go about this, though? It's a rather unusual circumstance. Though, Ken has an excellent memory for detail when not in a haze of plotholes and evil. So, if he recalls correctly -

"You're...Takato-kun, aren't you?"

Wormmon hops out of Ken-chan's arms and wiggles over to Guilmon. Now that he knows Guilmon is a safe friend, they can play together!
dreamtamer: (in thought)

Takato usually had a good memory for faces. Just not when the face was ten years older than the one he vaguely remembered.

He stares up at Ken blinking.

"Have we met before? Was it that time?" He would have remembered seeing a Wormmon at home, so it must have been that very strange time.

Guilmon is more than happy to have a new Digimon friend to play with. He'd just going to ignore the conversation now in favor of playing with the new friend.

"Whee!!!"

If they're going to play, then Wormmon may as well chase Guilmon's tail. He is not very good at this, because he is not very fast.

"Ah..." Ken nods. "That's right, Wormmon had evolved then, hadn't he."

But he should actually explain himself, before he confuses Takato any further. "It seems the timelines have crossed again. I'm Ichijouji Ken."

He'd show Takato his Digivice as proof, but 1) sometimes he only carries the smartphone version nowadays 2) it doesn't seem to have arrived with him - itself a conundrum, but one he'll ponder when not in company. There's something for him and Wormmon to do that won't require evolving....?

It's mysterious.
dreamtamer: (surprise)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2020-09-30 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Running away wasn't any fun if you couldn't be caught. Guilmon slows down so that Wormmon can almost catch his tail.

"Eh?" Here was an expression of complete shock. "Ichijouji-san? But you were my age then?"
ramengroupie: (discuss)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Almost" is still not a guarantee. Wormmon jumps for that tail - and misses. He sprawls in a pile of tiny legs, then shuffles back into place for another attempt. "Wait~"

Ken nods. "Eight years have passed for me. This is speculation, but the Voidtrecker Express might be able to summon people from different times, not just different worlds."

If you do the math, Takato, that means Ken is in college now. He is one year away from being a legal adult.

He's, like, ELDERLY.

Guilmon giggles a little as he gets ready for the next pounce.

Takato was still boggling at this. He knew people could arrive at these places from different times. Back then Taichi and Daisuke had been the same age.

But Ken looked old. Like an adult, almost.

"Wow. This is kind of weird. It's been eight years for you, but that was only a year ago for me. I feel like I haven't gotten any older at all."
ramengroupie: (serious)

it's the major, ken. the train is so desperate for a therapist it pulled a freshman

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-30 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ken nods. "Perhaps there's something I'm only capable of at this age."

Though without his Digivice, he can't imagine what that would be. Is he fundamentally different from the person he was since he last saw Takato....? What does the Voidtrecker Express need from him? Why him and Wormmon, and only them? Daisuke and Iori-kun had also both gone through the Digital Gate that had re-routed him here.

--He's thinking about it anyway, isn't he. Time to get back on track.

The next pounce is coming, Guilmon! It is not very subtle, given how much Wormmon needs to bunch himself up. Three, two - one -

FLYING WORM!

How's his aim???
