Test Drive Meme 016

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.

3. Have lots of fun. Mandatory, mod-sanctioned fun.

Happy testing!

Silence in the Library

The library is a double carriage. Downstairs is brightly-coloured, with cover posters across the walls, tables and chairs in the strong colours of the team uniforms, and a wooden model train placed as though winding its way through the carriage with carriages of shelves in tow. The walls are shelving, and beanbags litter the floor. Upstairs is quieter, rows of nonfiction shelves with private desks at the end of each row; the sound up here is muffled.

You don't know who, you don't know why, but someone or something has had a bad power day. How do you know? Well, the fact that the characters of any book you read keep coming to life as tiny versions of themselves and running riot around the carriage... that might have been a clue.

You just wish you'd picked a different book before realising it.

An Apple a Day

Medical is another double carriage, though it boasts one of the few person-sized lifts on the train as well as stairs. On the bottom floor, two of the three rooms are examination rooms, with simple beds, equipment and first-aid capacity. The third is a surgical bay, albeit a simpler one than some passengers may anticipate. All three rooms have ICPs with instructions and manuals for all equipment and a number of medical procedures.

Upstairs, there are four private recovery rooms, with a medical bed and an accessible en-suite. It's possible to check a passenger into one of these rooms, at which point they cannot leave until discharged by the person who checked them in.

Which, unfortunately, you are entirely aware of. You've been here for three days, and you're climbing the walls. But that'll teach you to get injured in such a stupid way. Or so they hope.

Sprockets and Skysong

In which a train arrives among the smokestacks of Little Underpool with some unexpected visitors.

Little Underpool is a township on Void world #30630687444. Caught up in the middle of what appears to be a series of industrial revolutions, the world is in a state of constant, chaotic innovation. Currently, that means that there is a power struggle going on between the skywhaling megacorporation Scrimshaw Inc and the Zephyr Company, an airship manufacturer, over control of the skies above Underpool, and the rapidly diminishing population of skywhales, whose bones are used in most modern airships, and whose blood is a key fuel source for a great number of new devices and engines. The voidtreckers are, this mission, to rescue the whales, rather than any humanoids.

Team One

Infiltrating Scrimshaw Inc, this team's job is to sabotage the tracking drones used to locate the whale pods, to allow the great beasts to migrate successfully away from Underpool. The offices of the corporation are in a series of spiralling brass and bone towers in the centre of the town, connected by exposed cable bridges that run to dizzying heights. Their clockwork guards are numerous, but often faulty, and highly vulnerable to tinkering.

Team Two

This team's job is to hijack some of the Zephyr Company's airships, and use them to defend the whale pods closest to Underpool. Several pods contain whale calves, and cannot evacuate as fast as the larger bachelor groups. The airships are light, and handle well, but their oddly organic design can be rather unsettling. The primary weapons are harpoons and short-range bomb slings, both as deadly against other airships as they are against their original targets.

Team Three

The final team's task is less direct - they must go among the populace of Underpool and spread unrest, redirecting the attention of the people towards the plight of their nonhuman neighbours in the sky, and the wrongdoings of their resident megacorporations. The people are not aware that the whales are an entirely sentient species, which appears to be a deliberate obfuscation by the town's council and sponsors. Your job is to change that.

Wen Ning | The Untamed Series

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-27 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)

[Library]

Wen Ning holed himself up in the carriage where the library was located. He couldn't wait to get his hands on the various books it had to offer. He had missed spending days just pouring over books and scrolls studying.

Well, he had been intent on studying if the book didn't come to life.... He made a face as a little person began running around. Trying to shut the book did no good as the person fought back and forced it back open. Wen Ning instead found himself chasing the person around the carriage thinking he had to get it back in the book.

[An Apple a Day]

Wen Ning carefully made his way through the carts, finding this whole train unsettling. Everyone else appeared at ease by it, but he still had a hard time getting used to it. This technology was beyond his time.

He had heard that the carriage had a medical area and wanted to check it out. Perhaps, lend a hand. He wondered how advanced the medical field was here? Maybe his own methods could still be of use. He was already impressed by what he saw as he carefully picked up various items and pamphlets studying them at a glance.

"Hello?" he called out, unsure of who to ask and who ran this cart.

[Wild Card]

Feel free to write your own prompt. I'll be happy to tag along.

Xue Yang often can be found just lounging in some random car and watching people pass by. It's the best way to see who is on the train and because he doesn't often have any interest in going to the platform to see the new arrivals, this is the easy way to encounter them.

And he just happens to be lounging as Wen Ning decides to head towards the medical car. His eye brow quirks up slightly as he notices the other Wen member. They seem to be multiplying at a rapid rate lately. A small smirk plays at the corner of his mouth, curious of what kind of reaction this one will have to him given their..history.

"You look lost."

Wen Ning gave a wary sigh when he heard the voice. He didn't need to look to know who he was talking. It was someone he really didn't want to see again and was in ways surprised that he was here as well. Granted, he was careful not to show any expression aside from his sigh.

"I'm where I need to be." Wen Ning simply answered and turned to study the other. It was obvious the other had been here for some time and was quite comfortable with his surroundings. But... Xue Yang always had the knack to appear at ease no matter where he was.

xue_yang: (I'm so sinister)

[personal profile] xue_yang 2020-09-28 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm..are you? Because I wouldn't think a place where you and I are once again living in the same space would be considered someplace you need to be."

The last time they were both imprisoned at Jin sect, Xue Yang was allowed to experiment. He wonders how much of that the man remembers give the nails in his head should have locked those kinds of memories away.

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-28 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Let me refrain. Where I need to be is at the medical cart. I've been granted permission to walk my own path. I'm well aware of what you have done and are capable of doing. I have no desire to fight or to be part of more experiments." Wen Ning replied in a firm tone.

He didn't remember the experiments, he didn't want to remember them. He just knew enough that people had used him as something to study from since he was the first to keep his consciousness.

"I simply wish to return to being a healer."

"And you think you can do that here? At least you have your sister here again to assist you. She has even had to help me on occasion."

Considering their history she could have easily left him to die but she didn't. And they have established a kind of understanding since then. Not that he cares to explain any of that to this Wen.
raddishpeddler: (pic#14345112)

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's her job to heal people, of course she would heal you." Wen Ning retorted. The fact that his sister was here surprised him. He made sure to hold back any expression not wanting to give Xue Yang more things to use against him.

Yet if Xue Yang was here, then why shouldn't his sister be as well? It was a relief to know he wasn't the only one from his world he got to interact with.

"You are insinuating I shouldn't return to my old job. Why? I still have the skills and capable of learning more. That should be more then enough." Wen Ning stubbornly replied.

WangJi was often found in the library of the train. Not that there was really anything good on offer at the moment. The car was still new and seemed to be taking some time to catch up on the books. He had come in today with Little Rabbit tucked into his robes, the small white rabbit sticking his head out to see where they were going.

As WangJi entered the car, he found not only a familiar face, but a small person running around as well. He sighed to himself, watching the tiny person for a long moment.

"Wen Ning. I suppose the train is up to no good?"

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-28 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"I suppose it is. Unless it's some kind of restless spirit causing problems? Is this normal for this train?" Wen Ning questioned as he concentrated on trying to capture the little guy.

He didn't want to crush him. It did have to return to the book, it seemed to be the most obvious thing. This whole situation reminded him of a cat trying to chase a mouse. Only, he wasn't making this a game.

"Have you been here for some time?" Wen Ning asked. He was realizing slowly that others form his world were among the train. He was glad too because he didn't just want Xue Yang for company.
achickenformylove: (mdzs 33)

[personal profile] achickenformylove 2020-09-28 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not likely a restless spirit," WangJi remarked as he carefully made his way over to a table to be able to set his rabbit down. If he was going to be trying to help Wen Ning catch this tiny person, the rabbit needed to be somewhere he wasn't in the way. Little Rabbit stepped down the bookcase, looking down at the commotion below, wiggling his tail. "I have never seen the train do this, but I am not surprised."

Should kind of say how used to weird things he was.

"A few months."
raddishpeddler: (pic#14345116)

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-28 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"You seem to refer the train as something with it's own consciousness. It has a will power of it's own to do things. Is it the train or something else behind it? Why would it do things like this?" Wen Ning questioned finding the subject fascinating.

He spotted the little rabbit and had he not been preoccupied he would have gone over to pet it. Returning the person back to it's book was the main priority before it could cause more damage.
achickenformylove: (mdzs 2)

[personal profile] achickenformylove 2020-09-28 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I believe it does have consciousness. If there is someone controlling it, we have never seen them or heard from them directly. It is always the train. And we don't know why it would do this."

Little Rabbit would still be there for petting later. He couldn't leave without WangJi. He knew who provided the food. Not to mention that this was a high jump even for a bunny and there was something strange running around...

WangJi knelt down once he'd gotten Little Rabbit settled, offering his hand to see if the tiny person would come over to him.

raddishpeddler: (pic#14345114)

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-28 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Interesting to note. Perhaps, it's using the train as a veil." Wen Ning suggested.

The little person approached WangJi and climbed up onto his hand. Wen Ning made a face of annoyance feeling somewhat betrayed. Perhaps, it was the Lightening Bearer's calm presence that lured him over. His own negative energy probably agitated the person more.

Wen Ning glanced in his master's direction enough to give him a deadpan look clearly saying he didn't think it was funny. "It's rather difficult trying to capture the person with out crushing him or damaging the cart in the process.

I mean I could easily do all of that and not care, but I don't think the rest of the residents here would be happy. Do you have a better way of handling this?"

With an expectant expression, he looked at his master for a better solution.

There's a tall lady with her red hair caught up in a messy work bun, her curls already rebelliously escaping as she turns to smile at him from where she was working rolling bandages.

Wen Ning hesitantly stepped back, realizing he had startled the woman working. He tried to straighten his cloak to hide the black veins along his neck, but it was clear she had already seen them. It was now more out of a self conscious gesture.

"I...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to alarm you. I didn't come here for medical assistance...." Wen Ning softly explained. He began to realize that his desire to help might be viewed as a contradiction. Would they let him help heal others despite him not being...alive?

She tips her head and looks at him
(her eyes are piercing, as if seeing more than flesh, as if weighing him)
and then she smiles at him.

"That is well! For I am but the least of our healers here, and can manage only the simplest of hurts. What can I do for you?"

Wen Ning forced himself to meet her gaze letting her try to decide for herself what he was like. He found it difficult and wanted to avert away from her gaze.

"I was told I was going to have to learn a lot here. That it would be different from what I know. I want to learn. M-my s-sister is here and helps. Wen Qinq. She's taught me what I know." Wen Ning anxiously explained. It was hard for him to talk to new people let alone try to explain what he was good at. He didn't believe he was good at a lot things thanks to his sect.

Could be worse. Could be actual Galadriel and mind-reading him! Nerdanel is not that rude though

"A student then?" She smiles and beckons him in. "You'll be more help here than I will, in that case. But I can at least show you where things are. In an unfamiliar place, that is the beginnings of learning. I am Nerdanel, at your service."

Re: Wen Ning | The Untamed Series

Wen Qing had come to the library to study the medical texts but instead, she found her beloved brother running around after... Was that a very tiny person wielding a sword?

She just stood there for a while, blinking, trying to remember how that perfect composure she was known for worked again because right now she had nothing.

"A-Ning, what's going on here?"
raddishpeddler: (Default)

[personal profile] raddishpeddler 2020-09-28 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wen Ning froze in mid pounce at the sound of his sister's voice. She was the last person he really expected to see among this place. It had been a long time since he had last seen her and those had been connected with painful memories.

If he could cry he would be crying now. Instead his body trembled as he turned to face his sister. The tiny person momentarily forgotten. He wanted to reach out and hug her, but stood where he was, unsure.

"Jiejie," he called out softly in a trembling voice.
radishlobbyist: (Default)

[personal profile] radishlobbyist 2020-09-29 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"A-Ning," she repeated, her voice softer now as it sank in that he was really back. She had watched her brother leave the train, had watched him walk through the gate she couldn't follow through and thought she would never meet him again... and now here he was, in the library as if they had never been torn apart a second time.

"You are well?" she asked, stepping forward, tears in her eyes, reaching for him, to grab his shoulders and reassure herself that he was well, that he was really here. "Please don't scare me like that again, A-Ning!"

That simple movement was enough for him to come running into her arms and embrace her, being mindful not to hurt her in the process. "I'm sorry," Wen Ning softly said even though he wasn't sure what she had meant. He had been here before?

"I'm here now and I'm okay as well as I can be."
