Test Drive Meme 016
Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!
1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!
2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.
3. Have lots of fun. Mandatory, mod-sanctioned fun.
Happy testing!
Silence in the Library
The library is a double carriage. Downstairs is brightly-coloured, with cover posters across the walls, tables and chairs in the strong colours of the team uniforms, and a wooden model train placed as though winding its way through the carriage with carriages of shelves in tow. The walls are shelving, and beanbags litter the floor. Upstairs is quieter, rows of nonfiction shelves with private desks at the end of each row; the sound up here is muffled.
You don't know who, you don't know why, but someone or something has had a bad power day. How do you know? Well, the fact that the characters of any book you read keep coming to life as tiny versions of themselves and running riot around the carriage... that might have been a clue.
You just wish you'd picked a different book before realising it.
An Apple a Day
Medical is another double carriage, though it boasts one of the few person-sized lifts on the train as well as stairs. On the bottom floor, two of the three rooms are examination rooms, with simple beds, equipment and first-aid capacity. The third is a surgical bay, albeit a simpler one than some passengers may anticipate. All three rooms have ICPs with instructions and manuals for all equipment and a number of medical procedures.
Upstairs, there are four private recovery rooms, with a medical bed and an accessible en-suite. It's possible to check a passenger into one of these rooms, at which point they cannot leave until discharged by the person who checked them in.
Which, unfortunately, you are entirely aware of. You've been here for three days, and you're climbing the walls. But that'll teach you to get injured in such a stupid way. Or so they hope.
Sprockets and Skysong
In which a train arrives among the smokestacks of Little Underpool with some unexpected visitors.
Little Underpool is a township on Void world #30630687444. Caught up in the middle of what appears to be a series of industrial revolutions, the world is in a state of constant, chaotic innovation. Currently, that means that there is a power struggle going on between the skywhaling megacorporation Scrimshaw Inc and the Zephyr Company, an airship manufacturer, over control of the skies above Underpool, and the rapidly diminishing population of skywhales, whose bones are used in most modern airships, and whose blood is a key fuel source for a great number of new devices and engines. The voidtreckers are, this mission, to rescue the whales, rather than any humanoids.Team One
Infiltrating Scrimshaw Inc, this team's job is to sabotage the tracking drones used to locate the whale pods, to allow the great beasts to migrate successfully away from Underpool. The offices of the corporation are in a series of spiralling brass and bone towers in the centre of the town, connected by exposed cable bridges that run to dizzying heights. Their clockwork guards are numerous, but often faulty, and highly vulnerable to tinkering.Team Two
This team's job is to hijack some of the Zephyr Company's airships, and use them to defend the whale pods closest to Underpool. Several pods contain whale calves, and cannot evacuate as fast as the larger bachelor groups. The airships are light, and handle well, but their oddly organic design can be rather unsettling. The primary weapons are harpoons and short-range bomb slings, both as deadly against other airships as they are against their original targets.Team Three
The final team's task is less direct - they must go among the populace of Underpool and spread unrest, redirecting the attention of the people towards the plight of their nonhuman neighbours in the sky, and the wrongdoings of their resident megacorporations. The people are not aware that the whales are an entirely sentient species, which appears to be a deliberate obfuscation by the town's council and sponsors. Your job is to change that.

Had her tone been off? ]
--Is something the matter?

I'm... not a huge fan of them... [Especially since there was no faster way for a body made out of ink to get splatted than to submerge in a large volume of water.]
[She sighed.] I'm sorry. The Jellies seem to enjoy the hot springs a lot, though.
no subject
The world is full of mysteries. But she does look sincerely sorry, and Ken feels bad. ]
It's nothing you need to apologize for. I'm just happy they exist.
Ken-chan's hobby is relaxing! Sometimes we sit on the veranda and watch the sun for hours and hours.
Mm.
[ neither of them seem to find anything amiss with this habit ]

Sometimes... I like to wake up early and head out to a lookout over the sea and watch the sun rise. The salt water spray comes rising up and it smells good. And you can see the day start anew and wonder "what does today have in store for me?"
[She smiles a sad, happy smile. A memory of a helicopter rising to meet an island platform. A lifetime and a heartbeat ago.]

[ And Eight sounds like she loves it a lot.
...That's right, isn't it. That's the most important thing. No matter what the reasons are why they've been called here, or why their worlds may overlap in some areas and not others, there's meaning simply in being able to care for one's home.
And if others' homes are endangered, and the Voidtrecker Express needs Ken to help with that....
He'll ride it as long as it needs him to. ]

[Her hands have clawed tips but practiced hands are reaching carefully not to scratch him. They gently fold into a cup with her hands and she beckons him to look into it.]
I may not like hot springs, but they are a memory. They are special to you, and you need to keep them in your heart. One day you may forget. Maybe its because of time. Maybe it is by someone's design. But if you keep them here, in the deep place where the soul resides, you will be able to feel them even when they seem lost.
Try to feel them. They are the precious things that make you. And when you face the dark and scary things, they will help you.
[Tenderly her hands give Ken's a light squeeze.]

[ How many times has he thought similar things? How many times has he been aware that nothing is absolute, how important it is to soak up every moment of the present while he has it before it becomes the past, irretrievable....
And the mention of "someone's design"....
Could it be, that she, like him....?
Ken's hands squeeze Eight's back. There's a strength in them, but his grip is gentle. ]
That's true. Nothing treasured by a heart is ever really gone. The good, and the bad, it's all a part of us.
[ Wormmon, meanwhile, is looking at those clasped hands. And the bug, is, uh, a little bug-eyed. Th-this mood--!! And Ken-chan's clasping her hands in return---!!!!!! ]
Hey. What are you doing....?
Had to make a new icon for this one -- THANKS WORMMON
[And then Wormmon said what he did.]
[Suddenly Eight became aware of what this situation looked like. A boy and a girl (and Wormmon) holding hands in a train car surrounded by flowers. Almost like they were... they were...]
[Ink started to flush into Eight's face, turning her skin the same color magenta as her tentacle hair. Oh cod. Oh cod... did she lead him on? Was this too much too soon? Carp, it does, doesn't it. Ohhh ship. Ship ship ship...]
[Her cool thoroughly lost, the octogirl pulled away, trying not to make the moment any worse. She clutched her hands to her chest.] AIII... I'm glad... you feel that way!!
[She needed a tactical retreat...]
he is, perhaps, a trifle needy
Ken feels like he just missed something, so he smiles, somewhat helplessly. ]
Thanks for calling out to me, Eight-chan. I'm glad we m-
Ken-chan, Ken-chan!
....Wormmon?
[ Why are is his partner crawling around onto his front? ]
My claws are cold! Hold them!
[ And Wormmon, gripping Ken's torso with four sets of legs, holds up the top set.
--Ken kinda has to take them, doesn't he? ]
no subject
[And in a second, the girl shifted from being a girl to being... rather giant-sized octopus. The tentacles coil tightly to the ground and with a single leap she shoots away in a burst of magenta ink--right into the door on the far side of the garden car.]
[There's a soft thud and a low "ow..." when the girl rematerialized from a blanket of ink. An unsteady hand reached for the door's handle before she booked a hasty retreat.]
no subject
Thanks to his experiences with Digimon, Ken's more surprised by the suddenness of her exit than by Suddenly Octopus. ]
...Um.
[ Was she okay? Should he follow? But if she wanted to leave him for now, maybe that would be a both--
Oh, and Wormmon's digging in claws when Ken starts to take a step forward, what's with that.
Young man and worm look at each other. Worm looks deeply into man's eyes, then cuddles. ] T-hee~
[ Ken sighs, and looks for a place to sit with Wormmon. It seems there's another ongoing mystery to solve surrounding Eight. ]
