Test Drive Meme 016

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.

3. Have lots of fun. Mandatory, mod-sanctioned fun.

Happy testing!

Silence in the Library

The library is a double carriage. Downstairs is brightly-coloured, with cover posters across the walls, tables and chairs in the strong colours of the team uniforms, and a wooden model train placed as though winding its way through the carriage with carriages of shelves in tow. The walls are shelving, and beanbags litter the floor. Upstairs is quieter, rows of nonfiction shelves with private desks at the end of each row; the sound up here is muffled.

You don't know who, you don't know why, but someone or something has had a bad power day. How do you know? Well, the fact that the characters of any book you read keep coming to life as tiny versions of themselves and running riot around the carriage... that might have been a clue.

You just wish you'd picked a different book before realising it.

An Apple a Day

Medical is another double carriage, though it boasts one of the few person-sized lifts on the train as well as stairs. On the bottom floor, two of the three rooms are examination rooms, with simple beds, equipment and first-aid capacity. The third is a surgical bay, albeit a simpler one than some passengers may anticipate. All three rooms have ICPs with instructions and manuals for all equipment and a number of medical procedures.

Upstairs, there are four private recovery rooms, with a medical bed and an accessible en-suite. It's possible to check a passenger into one of these rooms, at which point they cannot leave until discharged by the person who checked them in.

Which, unfortunately, you are entirely aware of. You've been here for three days, and you're climbing the walls. But that'll teach you to get injured in such a stupid way. Or so they hope.

Sprockets and Skysong

In which a train arrives among the smokestacks of Little Underpool with some unexpected visitors.

Little Underpool is a township on Void world #30630687444. Caught up in the middle of what appears to be a series of industrial revolutions, the world is in a state of constant, chaotic innovation. Currently, that means that there is a power struggle going on between the skywhaling megacorporation Scrimshaw Inc and the Zephyr Company, an airship manufacturer, over control of the skies above Underpool, and the rapidly diminishing population of skywhales, whose bones are used in most modern airships, and whose blood is a key fuel source for a great number of new devices and engines. The voidtreckers are, this mission, to rescue the whales, rather than any humanoids.

Team One

Infiltrating Scrimshaw Inc, this team's job is to sabotage the tracking drones used to locate the whale pods, to allow the great beasts to migrate successfully away from Underpool. The offices of the corporation are in a series of spiralling brass and bone towers in the centre of the town, connected by exposed cable bridges that run to dizzying heights. Their clockwork guards are numerous, but often faulty, and highly vulnerable to tinkering.

Team Two

This team's job is to hijack some of the Zephyr Company's airships, and use them to defend the whale pods closest to Underpool. Several pods contain whale calves, and cannot evacuate as fast as the larger bachelor groups. The airships are light, and handle well, but their oddly organic design can be rather unsettling. The primary weapons are harpoons and short-range bomb slings, both as deadly against other airships as they are against their original targets.

Team Three

The final team's task is less direct - they must go among the populace of Underpool and spread unrest, redirecting the attention of the people towards the plight of their nonhuman neighbours in the sky, and the wrongdoings of their resident megacorporations. The people are not aware that the whales are an entirely sentient species, which appears to be a deliberate obfuscation by the town's council and sponsors. Your job is to change that.

[BOY WHAT ABOUT COLLATERAL]

Yeah. Dumbass kid had no earthly idea what it was he was getting into. Probably read the vague concept and figured it would be a chance to prove himself. Something stupid and reckless like that. So he stole a hero's relic to summon a Servant, and bailed clear out of England to Japan--Fuyuki City, if it exists in your world.

[Waver fidgeted mindlessly with a thin silver chain around his neck- whatever kind of pendant it might have been, the charm itself was hidden under his collar. He knew damn well the cat was out of the proverbial bag, at this point. If it was ever in one.]

Almost got himself killed three or four times doing stupid shit, and he was definitely never the same physically or otherwise. [Sitting down as he was, the silver-handled cane rested against the chair momentarily ignored.] But he lived through it, because of his Servant...'Lancer'.

[yeah so about that second magic thing]

[ Wormmon is listening now too, with the air of a child absorbing a bedtime story. Waver really knows his students well to be this familiar with the kid they're talking about, so he must be a good teacher! Plus, Lancer sounds....

SO COOL.

Meanwhile, Ken feels like his stomach is somewhere beneath his hospital bed right now. Another person he used to be would be backing off, might have backed off earlier, but at this point he has a feeling it's better for both of them to finish the story. He doesn't want to look away. ]

...And Lancer?
fionnuisce: (a wish together i'll set them free)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-17 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...that's the thing, really. Servants are some next-level shit, to put it bluntly. Without an ongoing Holy Grail War, it's impossible for even an above-average mage to have the energy reserves to sustain one's existence. Even if they survive and win outright, once the war's over? That's it.

[His voice very carefully measured and controlled in the picture of steady calm, Waver snapped his fingers to underline the point.]

Either they die in combat, or they disappear once their wish and that of their Master is fulfilled. [...ostensibly, but you know, grail shit.] Vanishing back to myth and legend.

A partnership destined to dissolve...

[ Now that hits some troubles he hasn't quite had time to fully process yet. Ken looks down at his hands, remembering. They'd been looped in later, after all the battles - but -

"So? When do we go?"

- But Ken isn't alone. Even if he, himself, still gets bogged down sometimes, there are people who can show him other paths. Who can remind him to focus on what he can do instead of feeling like he can't. Thanks to whom, when he looks at Wormmon, he isn't afraid.

That's right. There is always light inside the darkness. Even apart, they're together. Wormmon. And the others. He doesn't need a Holy Grail for a miracle. ]

But....a part of them must remain. In their [ he can't say he likes this word, but it's the correct term according to Waver, and it no longer hurts like it used to ] Masters' hearts.
fionnuisce: (your name's all it knows)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
...How painfully sentimental. A Servant isn't something created from their Master's heart and soul; they existed long ago, and exist again because they have reason to pursue the Grail.

[But he didn't really argue with it past that.]

His Servant was a hero whose legend is deeply rooted in loyalty and betrayal. Both of them--for wildly different reasons--wanted to prove themselves as worthwhile. And whether he meant to or not, Lancer straightened that stupid kid out and made him realize how much of an idiot he was.

That idiot's partner...my Lancer, he was the kind of person you never forget, even if he wasn't a legendary hero. Someone who saves and changes your life like that, it's hard to say they're really gone even after they've left you.

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Ken nods. That much he doesn't need to look to the recent path to agree with. Sometimes, even though things can't last, the precious moments you did get to spend with someone important teach you many priceless lessons.

Even when they're unintended. ]
I'm glad you were able to meet.

And I'm sure [ though Ken is rarely sure ] he must have been, too.

Wait.

[ Wormmon has a suspicion now. He crawls up Ken's arm again to whisper into his partner's ear.

He is not very good at whispering. ]

Ken-chan, was the Professor the student in the story???

....Well.

You knew without him saying! Ken-chan, you're so clever!!

[ Ken stifles a self-conscious laugh. It wasn't that...difficult... ]
fionnuisce: (could my tears carve a path)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Waver stifled a laugh behind his hand. Well, at least someone fell for it.]

He was. Lan-...Diarmuid, I mean. At least he claimed as much, and honest people make terrible liars.
ramengroupie: (daisuke)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Wormmon knows this feeling. His antennae bounce when he nods. ] Ken-chan can't lie either. His eyes go to the side, like this.

[ Demonstration. ]

And he starts to walk away, like this....

[ Abrupt shuffling. ]

He's SUCH an honest, good boy!

[ ....The honest, good boy is distracted from recalling his Celtic mythology (when your friends research folklore, you pick up trivia). ] Do I still do that....?

You do! [ Wormmon thinks about this. ] Though you don't get scared and lie much any more. It makes me happy.

[ ....Well, Ken supposes that if Waver felt okay sharing his own awkward adolescence with him, now they're even. ]
fionnuisce: (your name's all it knows)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[...this bug is a riot and he’s trying so hard not to crack up. he’s got an image, geez.]

Yeah? Sounds terrible to give the whole thing away so easily. Sometimes hiding the truth a little is important to get by.

[ah, mage politics. Waver had gone back to fiddling idly with the chain of his pendant, laughing under his breath.]

He was the kind of person that’d fold immediately if you caught him out. A couple lies by omission to keep things to himself—not a bad quality to have, I’ll confess I do the same.
ramengroupie: (satisfied)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Waver keeps playing with that necklace - but that's his business, Ken supposes. He feels glad enough Waver felt comfortable with sharing this much, and even if a Master and a Servant can't be together forever, Ken had been so sincere when he'd said he was happy Waver and Lancer - Diarmuid - had met.

Memories that bring a smile are the best, even if they also sting. ]

I've found not lying to yourself is the crucial part. If you can manage that, the rest follows.

[ ken you're 19

stop sounding 99 ]

[waver velvet is 28 and acts like he’s 40]

[to be fair, he feels like it]

Oh, that’s the hardest part. Being honest with yourself is second only to seeing yourself how others see you in near impossibility.
ramengroupie: (glad)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The hardest things are the most worth doing.

[ Not gonna deny it's hard, though. Ken has eight years of practice and he still trips himself up. But he's....learning to be okay with that.

....Speaking of self-awareness, this is nice. There aren't many people in his life, even now, with whom he can discuss this sort of how-minds-work thing. And it's such an important part of his own way of perceiving the world.

They may have differing perspectives, but this former student really may be something like Ken. ]

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. But the real trick of it is to listen to the people around you. If someone says ‘you are worth this’, then it would be an insult to their faith in you to write it off with your own doubts.

It’s hard to believe people when they praise your skills or personality. But now and then, you meet someone who knows what they’re talking about.
ramengroupie: (Default)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true.

[ He's had his fair share of the opposite - believing people he shouldn't have when they told him negative things about himself - but wasn't that because the things they'd said corresponded to the things he'd been telling himself? It's the people who have stood up for Ken, really stood up for him, that have surprised him.

Lancer must have been the same way. ]

But you always believe me, right?

Of course.

[ Wormmon is so pleased by this he thinks he'll go squat on Ken's head some more. This is a great perch. It's as close to Ken-chan as one can get, and also makes him feel tall. ]
fionnuisce: (a wish together i'll set them free)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You’ve got a pretty honest face, for a bug. I’d believe you, if I were this kid.

[Again he shrugged with one shoulder, laughing off the unexpected turn today had apparently decided on.]

...Doubt it’s ever going to happen, but you two want to keep an eye out for me? If we pull up to a platform and you ever see someone about my height, messy black hair and gold eyes with a mark under the right one—just...let me know.
ramengroupie: (glad)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh - this is a good idea. Ken sits up straighter, following along. (Apparently he's so used to worm hat that his body adjusts for the weight automatically.) ] I see. Because anyone from any time could arrive here.

[ And he's good with details, so he doubts a person like that would escape his notice! ] I'll definitely keep watch.
fionnuisce: (hope discarded and broken)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know better than to put any stock in the concept of ‘impossible’, at the absolute least; never hurts to be overly prepared. Besides, he’d be hard to miss.
ramengroupie: (soft)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If we see him, you'll be the first to know.

And you can look for Digimon, too!

[ Digimon are even harder to miss!

For some reason! ]
fionnuisce: (could my tears carve a path)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I could, certainly. Are they all as conveniently travel-sized as you?
ramengroupie: (object)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Travel?

[ Does Waver think Wormmon worldhops because he's small?

....Ken can tell he is needed here. ]
They vary. In fact, the same Digimon can take different forms. Wormmon is a "Child-Level" Digimon. He can evolve into an "Adult-Level", or conserve energy as a "Baby".

[ OH. Oh okay, that's what we're talking about! ]

That's right. I get bigger and stronger to protect Ken-chan!
fionnuisce: (and lead me straight to your heart)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...Hm. That's actually pretty interesting, not to mention useful. Wouldn't have guessed.
ramengroupie: (daisuke)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sorry, Wormmon, Ken is a stickler for accuracy. He has to provide the caveat. ]

We can't do it right now. There's an item we need....

[ No Digivice = no evolution = a Ken who hasn't been able to help but try to determine why he and Wormmon would be summoned here deprived of that ability. Maybe they just have to be patient? Or maybe...there's something more? ]

But once we get it back, we'll stop all the darkness at all the stops. For sure.

Let's do what we can for now.

Yeah!

[ .....Ken's bandaged leg shifts. "What he can do for now" has had mixed results, thus far. (Not that he regrets it. The people he was saving got away.) ]
fionnuisce: (could my tears carve a path)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell you what. You've put up with me for a while, so let me take a look at that leg. I was never one to specialize in healing, but I did have a very good teacher.

[He stood back up, the rose-handled cane back in his hand.] Besides, you don't want to aggravate that kind of thing. Otherwise you'll end up walking as unevenly as I do and the only bright side is an excuse to literally speak softly and carry a big stick.
ramengroupie: (huh?)

[personal profile] ramengroupie 2020-09-18 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Roosevelt, isn't that?

[ ....But Ken will do as the Professor says instead of focusing on details to hide how self-conscious being done a favor makes him. He'd just been lectured on self-worth, hadn't he? He'll be good.

When Ken unwraps his bandages, Wormmon has to crawl back and hide his face, not a fan of the sight of bl--bl----of Ken-chan hurt. The gash in Ken's leg does seem to be healing, with no signs of infection, but....the boy still put himself between someone and the business end of a sword. He'd needed stitches. The stitches were very traumatic.

For Wormmon. ]
fionnuisce: (holding up the light within)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-09-18 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a quick one, I like that.

[Waver frowned as he looked it over, brow furrowed in thought. Just a laceration, that wasn't too bad. Half to himself, he muttered:] Hm...might be a tall order to fix it entirely, but I can accelerate it a little. Less likely to open back up.

[Setting the cane aside for a moment, Waver held out his right hand--the back of which was marred by very faint old scars in a peculiar shape.]

Here's another saying from a philosopher I prefer: 'love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves'.

[the words of perhaps the greatest minds, indeed. A faint pale green glow emanated from his hand, and like a flame taking a moment to catch, the wound in Ken's leg pulled itself together a little more securely. A weird feeling, most likely, but not a painful one.]
