Test Drive 038

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

Dreams of Persimmon

The kitchens have been restocked as they are every month and this month is the small fruit the Persimmon. Newer ones can be bitten into, more ripe ones can be cut open and the flesh inside scooped out. They aren’t a terrible fruit as long as fruit is a favourable food. But there are hundreds of them.

It seems whatever system ordered food did not take into consideration the fact there are far less Voidtreckers than there once were. This much fruit could feed double the train population and still probably be too much, in the way that ingredients of the month often were.

Soup maybe? Sweet pies? Maybe jam is in their future. But someone has to do something about these overflowing baskets!

We're all going on a Summer Holiday

The roof of the garden carriage has been opened to the air and the train is currently meandering its way through the ever sunlit lands of system #32131. It’s warm but pleasantly so. The water features in the garden have more water than usual, becoming fountains for voidtreckers to play in if they wish.

Otherwise there’s plenty of space to laze in the sun, it’s a bit rocky but blankets can be found and laid down, drinks can be brought from the kitchen, snacks too most likely. There is always someone baking on this train.

Watch out though, there are supersoakers on board and plenty of buckets, a relaxing day might not be what everyone has in mind.

Jungle Heights

The latest mission has taken them to a vast jungle, where people live high in the trees. There has been an influx of tree dwelling creatures with sharp teeth, sharper claws and a love of destruction. To make things better the forest floor is not safe, damp and marshy many creatures lurk there ready to bite at ankles and it is home to a root, the sap of which burns.

Team One

Treetop fighting is an acquired skill and one the voidtreckers are having to learn quickly. Swing on vine ropes and tangle with monsters. Quick movement and quicker thinking is needed to take down the creatures in terrain they are naturals at traversing.

Team Two

People here live on platforms in the trees, with bridges and walkways connecting them. Fend off the creatures and chase them away from peoples homes. At least there is slightly solider ground beneath their feet, but they must be careful not to fall to the jungle floor beneath.

Team Three

Many of the people here are not fighters and they need help to get somewhere safer. It's a tough journey through the forest, especially when they leave the bridges and platforms of the village behind. Children may need carried and climbing from one tree to another is difficult even with sturdy branches to walk along.

They must be careful to stay in the trees, avoid getting too close to the forest floor but do not get too high, lest they attract the creatures.

Leia is trying her best. Najaran is just a mess.

"I didn't try to sacrifice myself! I'm not a hero or brave or anything," she said, quickly. "But I had to try. So I didn't wear my SCA. I don't wear it any more anyway... I just... I can't run away all the time. I didn't know if I could save those people or not, but they were willing to stand and fight for their home. And they needed help!"

Wait what.

"Isn't the SCA necessary to get you to come back to the train?" Adrien asked.

She rubbed the back of her head. "Kinda... yeah..."

"Ah. Now I can see where the yelling came in," Adrien said.

He leans back, tilting his head and after a moment, he holds out a hand to her. After a moment, in sparks of electric green and black, a yellow rose appears in his hand.

"I get it," he said. "The desire to protect someone, to put everything of yourself on the line to do it. I still have nightmares of trying to drag my best friend out of a fire as a building collapsed around me. I couldn't care, I didn't care, how it burned, how it hurt, all I wanted was to save him," he said and held out the rose to her.

She stared at the rose, then nodded, distracted by his words and the magic from her own pain for the moment. "Were... were you able to save him...?" she whispered, eyes locked on the rose. She didn't touch it, thought he was just showing it to her.

Adrien gently takes her hand and put the rose in it gently.

"No," he said. "I died. And so did he."

She blinked and held onto it. "But... you're here now... so it was like me, right? Okay because you didn't stay dead?"

"We revived a week later," Adrien said, squeezing her hand briefly before pulling away. "The same place where I learned to do that. Its funny, I knew about it for literal years. The dead don't stay dead there. They come back in a week. I had that thought in my mind several times, when I knew I was going into danger, but had to go because either something permanent would happen or maybe I thought I could make it and help someone I cared about or a million and one reasons."

"I knew my friend would die in that fire. I knew if I stayed to help, chances were very small either one of us would get out. If I left...I could have," he said. "I could have left. Said he'd be back in a week. He wouldn't want me to die."

"But it didn't matter. It didn't matter if leaving guaranteed I would have lived. It didn't matter how small the chances were we'd both get out. It didn't matter he'd be alive again in a week. All that mattered at the time was he was my friend and he was in danger, and there was still that small, so very small chance."

She nodded and then looked up at him. "You... you understand.." she said in something akin to shock. He was the first person who actually seemed to... to get it. "Did people yell at you too?" she asked, softly.

"Yes. Also got a lot of crying and a lot of hugging," Adrien said. "But by that point, most people who got why I stayed knew how I was like and how impossible it would be to change it. And those who didn't get it...well, they didn't quite get me," he said.

They either knew he was Chat Noir and knew he would never be able to leave.

Or just knew him as Adrien and thought he was caught up in everything.

"I... got hugs too..." she admitted, fiddling with the rose as she spoke. "It's still weird... getting hugs..." she added, quietly.

"I know, right?" Adrien said with a small laugh. "Still feels unreal how often it happens now a days."

She stared at him wide eyed. And came to a conclusion based on her own situation. "You don't have parents anymore either?"

"....my father is alive," he said. "My mother isn't."

"Oh...." She looked at the rose again. "I never had a mom. Till the Train took us somewhere that gave us all these fake memories and made Leia my mom. I don't remember much of it, but she decided she's my mother now. I... don't know how to have a mother," she admitted. Then she took a deep breath and started out at the distance. "I haven't seen my father... since I was real little. But the Train made me little again once and I could remember him so clearly then." She swallowed a bit. "I was a kinda stupid child," she admitted, then shook her head. "But I love all the friends I've made here, even the ones who went away. And that's still something right? We can love the people who left... even after they're gone, right?" she wiped at her eyes with the back of the hand that wasn't holding the rose.

"Leia isn't a bad mom to have," he said. "She's helped me before. She's very kind, very understanding. I....I don't think you need to know how to have a mom. I think when it comes to parents and kids, its the parents who need to know how to be and then they can help the child," he said, fidgeting with his ring. "Even if things are difficult, she still loves you."

He looked over questioningly. "How were you a stupid kid?" He asked.

"Yeah. Yeah, of course we can," he said. "Just because my mom is gone doesn't mean I love her any less. I'll always remember her. Even when it hurts, I never want to not remember her. Because those memories are important to me."

"You know Leia? Already?" Wow, Leia really was amazing, huh? "She... said that too... that she loves me, even when she's angry at me..." Which was just so weird to hear someone say to her.

"I was a stupid kid because I used to believe it when my father would say things like how it was too pretty a night to sleep indoors and stuff," she said with a small laugh. She missed him so much. "A lot of what he said was so wise that I guess I just thought everything was..."

She nodded. Her memories were important to her too. Her dad. Kigi. Duo. Mina. Della. Curufin. So many many people... And she'd never see them again.

"Leia and I knew each other elsewhere. She used to be my teacher," Adrien said. "In the place where I didn't stay dead. Another place...kinda like this. But she was honest, you know. She does love you. Even when she's angry. That's how...that's how parents should be. No matter how much their kid messes up, how lost, how...angry they are, their parents are supposed to love them."

Adrien frowned at that. "Was he....just a fan of camping, or...?" Or was it bad?

"Another place like... Digad?" she asked. That was the name of the place with the fake memories, right?

But at his question she shook her head and put the rose into her hair carefully, winding some of her hair around the stem before tucking the whole thing into her headband to anchor it.

"Those were the days he couldn't find anyone who would let us sleep inside their business or stables or anything. I used to ask him why he would never use his Cards on the people who were after us all the time, and he said it was because he honestly owed them money..." she wrapped her arms around Eidolon. "And because a Cepter should never ever use his or her powers against those who aren't Cepters. That that's not what the Cards are for. He also never took more than the one ante Card from a Cepter he beat and would never sell his Cards. Because he said the ante Card is an act of trust, and that our Books are the sum of all the hopes and dreams of all the Cepters whose Cards are in our decks..." her voice had grown soft and distant. "I didn't get it then, but I sure do now." She reached behind her back with one hand and a few cards flew out of the pouch attached to the back of her belt. She looked at them, a small sad and wistful smile on her face. "So many people trusted me with a part of their hearts..." she closed her eyes. "So I have to protect them. For everyone I've fought, for everyone I've befriended...." She took a deep breath, then the Cards flew back into the pouch from her hand. "But I also get now that we were kinda homeless." She winced a little and rubbed the back of her head as she said that.

"Only some of the time," Adrien said. "A place between worlds, populated by outsides, like the train is, but its a world. Or...plane. Its a little weird, easier to think of it as another world."

Oh, that kind of lying and he relaxes a bit. "It sounds like he was trying to do his best, for you, and to be a good role model. Its not so bad to fall for lies like that for a while," he said. "He just wanted you to still be happy in the world. Honestly, I'm impressed he managed to keep to a code of honor. Being homeless isn't exactly an...easy life..."

There is a pause. "Which sounds really patronizing when I already told you I was a rich kid, but there was a time I was in a Digad scenario where I had a life where I was homeless and that lifetime is pretty burned in my memories for a lot of reasons." Mostly for the trauma and the information of the Miraculous, but still. "What I'm saying its really hard to both be honorable and survive, especially when you're trying to take care of family."

She nodded a bit. She didn't follow all of the, but she was pretty sure she got the important part. "Yeah, my dad was pretty great, huh?" she asked with a small smile, chewing in her finger. It was a habit she had mostly grown out of, but sometimes when thinking of her dad, it snuck back in.

"He was," Adrien said. "He did the best with what he got, and he ended up with a really kind daughter," he said.

Then he paused.

"And...speaking as someone who understands, especially in regards to Leia...I think the biggest thing that hurts them is you left the SCA behind."

She smiled and flushed slightly at what he said. Until he got to the last part. She shook her head. "No, they've been yelling at me about that for ages. This was a different kind of yelling."

"Have you ever left the SCA behind when you could die?" Adrien asked.

"Oh that's right," she said after a moment of thought. She looked at him then at her hands. "You're new here. Most of the missions are dangerous. We don't always know how dangerous until we're in the thick of things..."
