Test Drive Meme 021

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.

3. Have lots of fun.

Happy testing!

Spring Cleaning

Chores aren’t for everyone. And, as the morning reaches a close, it turns out that they are especially not for wizards.

That is to say, someone may have cast a spell animating all of the mops, brooms and dishcloths on-board, which are now sweeping their way up and down the carriages, cleaning everything - and everyone - they can reach. And animating anything else they can find, for maximum efficiency. Books, clothing, cutlery-

This isn’t so bad in the bathrooms. In the library, however? The armory? Bang, and the dirt is gone.

Open Mic

The ground floor of the music carriage is usually a mess of instruments, but tonight they’ve all been tucked away neatly at one end of the room. Chairs from the upper floor have been carried down en masse, all facing towards the jukeboxes and screens at the other end.

You might not be entirely sure who rigged them for karaoke, but you know one thing: you’re here now, a drink in one hand and a list of popular (by someone’s standards) songs in the other. If people aren’t singing or waiting to sing, they’re cheering friends on, or skulking and trying everything in their power not to be called up, or even escaping upstairs to talk more comfortably.

’Til Death Do Us Part

The world of Abarranz is ruled by the Undying Lords, and has been for almost two thousand years. The civilisation has stagnated - not only due to the immortal council, but also because the majority of its citizens are undead. Some, the rich, the powerful, are able to undergo great rituals to maintain their consciousness and skill even in death; others are unfortunate enough to be dragged into death with neither, and exist as shells of themselves. The greatest necromancers of the planet are harnessing the death of a minor star in the system to fuel a mass conversion of the remaining populace, but the remaining living citizens are those who have already refused the change. Voidtreckers, they cannot resist alone.

Team One
Pockets of the living survive in hiding, but are split off from one another and unable to unify under the overwhelming forces surrounding their enclaves. This first team is tasked with clearing the mindless hordes threatening them, so that they might establish communications, venture out, and join the fight.
Team Two
The best way to escape the ritual is to remove the remaining living to another colony in the system - but the rituals and spells able to do so are all jealously guarded by the eternal council in their libraries and vaults. A viable target has been identified - the treasure rooms of the Viscount Eldermann holds a tome rumoured to contain a mass teleportation ritual. Infiltrating and securing this tome is this team’s task, and while the mission is possible, the traps and guards won’t make it easy.
Team Three
Even with these plans in motion, every second counts. This third team is given the role of saboteur - to interrupt, delay or otherwise slow the Grand Ritual of a Star’s Demise from within the stronghold of the Undying Lords. The dressing carriage - and their SCA wristbands - are at their disposal, the former for appropriate Abarranz costume and pallor, the latter to hide the telltale signs of life, should they have any.

Wen Ning | The Untamed (OU)

[personal profile] deadwenwalking 2021-02-18 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
((ooc: I may be slow on account of weather, but I'm gonna try my best.))

spring cleaning.

Wen Ning has seen various kinds of magic in his time - people fly on swords in his world, after all, but he's not sure he's seen such a blatant display as this. It seems like something Wei Wuxian would enjoy.

"Excuse me," he apologizes to a busy mop as though it's a sentient entity (And who's to say it isn't?) as it moves past him. He wouldn't want to interrupt its task, after all.

This isn't much of a problem until a pair of floating dishrags attempts to take the book he's currently holding out of his hands. He frowns and tugs back. He isn't done reading that! "This isn't necessary... I-I'll put it back when I'm done."

'til death do us part - team three

Wen Ning might be alive (in his version of his world, at least) but it's an odd, gray area form of living and can be hard to tell from his physical appearance. He's deathly pale, the strange black lines up his neck not helping anything. He might not look like a walking corpse exactly, but he comes close - and he does a great naturally stiff gait too. This means he needs very little in the way of adjustment to his appearance to pull this off.

"Y-you know... it took me a while to get my limbs working close to the way they should again. This feels like a step backward." He doesn't mean to complain, though it might come out that way. Going undercover is actually an exciting experience, even if this is a very serious matter. Usually he's the brute force.

He'd like to believe he has the sort of skills to pull off this sort of caper too.

"Do you need any help?" Wen Ning looks to his partner in crime, hoping they'll have a similarly easy time getting into costume.

wildcard.

spring cleaning; also SHOUTS :') hello again

[personal profile] deferences 2021-02-19 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Initially, Sizhui's assuming the familiar voice is addressing him, but as he turns to look and sees Wen Ning talking to one of the mops gliding its way across the floor, he can't help smiling faintly at the sight. Of course his uncle would be kind to an inanimate object, that just seems proper for him, and to be fair, the item does seem like it's politely going about its business after the pardon.

As he's readying to greet him, he comes up short whenever the rags try taking whatever book it is Wen Ning's reading. Following a brief head-shake, Sizhui moves forward, reaches out, catches the cloths by their corners and draws them away to a nearby window, hoping it'll be enough to keep their focus so the other cultivator can continue reading.

“Move quickly, before they decide they're still interested in what you have.” Then he gestures down the corridor with a brisk turn of his chin, already planning to follow once he's sure they won't be pursued.

hello! :3

Sizhui's appearance causes a relieved look to immediately fall over Wen Ning's face. Considering the possibility of sentience with these household items means he's just about as at ease with them as he would be any other unknown individuals that were suddenly in his personal space. Which is to say not at all.

He holds the book tightly to his chest with both arms, following after the boy. Would they be chased? Fighting floating dust rags isn't how he'd imagined himself spending his afternoon. Was wanting to read a book about dinosaurs such a crime? He's allowed to borrow this. It doesn't have to go back on the shelf just yet. Perhaps there had been some confusion in their activation spell and Wen Ning hadn't registered as living. That wouldn't surprise him, honestly.

"Are they... all over the train?"

He grins outright, unable to help himself, his enthusiasm blatant at yet another someone he knows being here on the train. With Wen Ning closely following behind him, he does hesitate mid-step once they're a decent amount of feet away, turns and glances over his shoulder to make sure the dishrags are still busy cleaning the window. Thankfully, they are, so he continues right on leading them down the hallway.

They're actually near his cabin, just a brief walk away, which should be safe from any sentient cleaning objects. (Oh no, poor Wen Ning and possibly not being seen as a living person!) Regardless of why he'd been bothered by the towels, Sizhui's determined to protect him from anything else that might try and steal his reading material before he's done with it. Especially something about dinosaurs because stories about those have been a few of his favorite books to read.

“Unfortunately,” he sighs. “Thank goodness, they're mostly harmless, just persistent with their jobs.”
deadwenwalking: (concerned)

[personal profile] deadwenwalking 2021-02-20 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Persistent is a good way of putting it. Whoever had enchanted these objects was admittedly clever, though. It allowed everyone else on the train to do other activities without having to worry about cleaning. So far he wasn't seeing any of the mops or brooms acting up in a way that would actually cause a mess instead, which is good.

"Master Wei would have... either enjoyed messing around with something like this back in the Burial Mounds - or he would have hated them because they would a-actually organize his things." And heaven forbid his important projects end up anywhere but on the floor for others to dance around. Not that many others actually went into the man's living quarters.

"I think I would rather clean my own room." Perhaps it was for the best that he didn't own much right now that would require cleaning. A broom could go around his living space and not bother anything important.

Yes, okay, ‘convenient’ would be another way to describe it... but the uncontrolled way that they'd almost overwhelmed poor Wen Ning for his book only a few minutes earlier could eventually prove troublesome. At least they seem easily directed and allow them to escape without giving chase, something Sizhui takes advantage of.

“Perhaps we might run across him on the train and ask! There are, ah, technically two of them? But the one from our world is here, so we could ask if he specifically might enjoy or hate them at his Burial Mounds.” Then when they find out where the parallel Wei Wuxian is, they could ask him, too. One of them would surely like the enchanted cleaning items, but it's a for sure thing they'd both have projects littering the floor if there was room.

“I feel the same way. It's something to do during idle train time and I'm not worrying about a magical mop misplacing my things.” He shakes his head, playfully rolls his eyes then stops in front of a closed door that he opens with the card from his pocket. “You ought to be able to read safely in here,” Sizhui suggests. “And we can chat for a bit.” Because he already has so many questions.
deadwenwalking: (confront)

[personal profile] deadwenwalking 2021-02-25 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Two of them... He'd thought there might have been some chance he could eventually get used to this place, but that thought flies back out the window with nearly every new discovery he makes here. Wen Ning isn't asking questions. They only bring further confusion. His only response to that revelation is the slight widening of his eyes.

Though he feels a bit awkward following Sizhui into his living quarters. This is the boy's personal space. It's true that they're friends as well as relatives, but he hasn't lived with him since he was a small child. He'd tucked the boy into bed and shared boring stories about radish gardening, because at least those weren't scary.

"Th-thank you." He isn't going to turn away the offer, of course, and he enters after his younger cousin without hesitation. "Chatting would be nice."

Don't worry, he was just as surprised at the train's ability to have duplicates, too. Parallel world Lan Wangji told him all about that madness almost as soon as he'd arrived because there had apparently been a different Sizhui at some point. For reassurance, the boy nods, though he doesn't say much else on the subject; it's an odd one to discuss and he'd prefer not straining himself by thinking too much.

Good thing it isn't only Sizhui's space, huh? There's one other person he's roomed with at the moment who is on the opposite side of the room, their belongings different from his own. The bottom bunk he's taken has his sword, qiankun pouch, and one of the reed butterflies from home alongside some other baubles and glass trinkets he's collected during his five months on the Voidtrain. Carefully made paper haitang flowers litter the wall in an array of colors too, a real small area that's similar to his old bedroom, despite missing some items here or there. (How unfortunate, he probably doesn't remember those stories, as he would've recalled them fondly...)

“Of course.” He gestures toward the lower bed, the upper one already neatly folded up and out of the way so they can sit at the makeshift bench with an attached table.

Wen Ning took in everything as though this might be the last time he'd ever see it. Right now it's hard to think that might not be the case. All of this madness could disappear in an instant and he could wake up back in their world with this having been nothing but a dream - the result of an overactive imagination.

It seems too real for that, though. Even his most detailed of dreams have never included this much sensory engagement.

Sizhui's living space is so quaint and... cute. Every decoration chosen is just so very him that Wen Ning's heart could melt on the spot. Whoever his roommate is had best appreciate him, as they're fortunate to even be breathing the same air as this child. He almost misses the gesture the boy makes for him to sit, and he hurries to do so once he realizes he's been standing vacantly. "I-I like your room."

Watching Wen Ning look everything over with such conscientiousness makes Sizhui's heart flutter fondly, delighting in the fact he's paying such close attention to the little details of his cabin. Frankly, the younger thinks he could use more cute folded paper things, but he's never been a selfish one. Other people need materials too, so. . .

Although that is a fair argument, it feeling much more real than a dream ever would.

Needless to say, he does take pleasure in how his room looks and likes keeping it tidy, so his roommate surely appreciates that? Also likely is grateful for how quiet he is as well. After Wen Ning sits, Sizhui does the same, smiling faintly, halfway considering teasing him about the absentminded loitering but thinking better of it. He's only just got here, after all, there is an adjustment period! “Thanks, I'm glad you do. It took a little getting used to, with having three other people sometimes, but I feel like I've made my place.”
