Test Drive 018

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.

3. Have lots of fun.

Happy testing!

Heated Debate

The spa carriage, the newest addition to the train, boasts sunlamps and loungers, massage tables stocked with fluffy towels and a variety of oils and lotions, an enclosed sauna… Soothing birdsong fills the warm, scented air, and the terminals offer several masseuse courses or a playlist of relaxing music.

In pride of place, a three-tiered heated bath in the centre of the room, each tier able to fit five people comfortably.

‘Comfortably’? Well, it could definitely fit more, but it might get a little awkward, depending on your feelings on personal space. Ditto with the sauna, really. But the important thing is, you got here first.

Didn’t you?

Getting Draughty In Here

The lower floor of this carriage is open and sprawling, with two wide, low tables and plenty of cushions and beanbags. The walls are lined with shelves and wooden chests, both filled with games. Board games, card games, you name it, though train themes feature heavily. On a shelf of its own sits a case of Duel Monsters cards.

The upper floor is split into two. One half has a pile of oversized games - lawn jenga, twister, giant connect4 - and the other, sectioned off with soft rope barriers, hosts a screen, a console, and a variety of video game controllers, including four VR headsets.

Perhaps you’re testing yourself in one of the VR Crisis simulators. Perhaps you’re learning the rules of a competitive card game a little too well, and your friendships are suffering accordingly. Perhaps you’ve convinced someone to play twister with you..?

Shiver Me Timbers

You are aboard the PNV Vexation, a first-rate ship accompanied by several escort vessels currently halfway through a voyage across the Sunsea of Yarra, AKA #59352110. The cargo she carries is of utmost importance, and must reach the Shining Port intact.

The pirates who sail the Sunsea have other plans.

Team One
The Vexation has several sloops in tow - the best of which are the Gemstone Heart, the Fallen Lord and the Duckling. Team One is split across the three sloops, and can use their greater speed to good effect in boarding actions. Your job is simple - sink every unmarked ship that approaches the Vexation. The captains are cooperative and daring, and happy to lend out boarding axes and pistols. The pirates are less happy.
Team Two
Back aboard the Vexation, it seems that either the crew are playing tricks, or something more sinister is going on - whispers of spirits roaming the deck at night, strange screams or whimpers in the hold. Lights off the starboard bow. The day holds no such terrors, and shipboard life is mostly ropes, deckwork and stints on the masts, but as the mission continues, the crew are getting more and more restless… Team Two needs to figure out the source of these strange events, before they incite the crew to mutiny.
Team Three
Unbeknownst to the crew, on the second day of the mission, the precious cargo is loaded onto the fourth and fastest of the Vexation’s escorts, the Sun’s Edge, and sent ahead, while the fleet remains as as a decoy. Team Three are sent aboard the Edge to crew the ship and keep the treasure - something sealed in a large, padded steel pyramid - safe. The pirates don’t notice the deception, but the sea serpents definitely do, and with just one serpent able to wrap its entire length around the Edge, the third day is a harrowing one.

[ There was a car, a whole car dedicated to relaxation, why would anyone find him anywhere else? It didn't really matter what team he was on, he swiped a pair of blue shorts and settled himself in one of the pools and to occupy his time, he was playing with the water, almost idly, wiggling his fingers as the water floated upward out of the pool and made a few shapes. A musical note, a heart, a cat...he could do this all day, and just might in fact do that.

Interruption won't dispel the light magic at all, but Demyx will offer a grin. ]

Hey, what's up! [ Is this a chance to get some attention? He loves attention. ]

Team One

[ He blinks a little bit at being offered a pistol or an axe and he shakes his head. ]

Nah, I'm good, I've got my own.

[ His 'own' weapon appears to be a sitar as big as he is. ]

I just have to sink the ships, right?

[ How hard could that be? He could just make the water do the work for him. ]

Team Three

[ Oh. A sea serpent. That was less than an ideal creature, because presumably, it was used to the water it came out of. He stares a moment, and offers a confident smile! ]

I'm sure you've got this handled!

[ Is he really just going to bail on a teammate? Possibly. ]

xxxxx🛡️ Shiver Me Timbers - general

It wasn't the Inquisitor's first time on a boat, thankfully. Once upon a time, she'd had to flee Ferelden for the Free Marches while stuffed in a cargo hold; a fugitive facing an uncertain future. It felt like a lifetime ago, and in some ways it had been.

At least this time Alley could walk the deck, her balance only occasionally thrown off by the combination of the waves below and the odd weight disparity of her missing arm. All that stood in for it was a flat, blackened metal bar with a few holes drilled into it... a far cry from a muscled, armored limb.

She hadn't had enough time to get used to that, even on stable ground. And the boat wasn't helping.

With a curse at a particularly large swell under the boat, the scarred elf tried to catch herself on a nearby railing -- with a hand that wasn't there anymore. The dragonbone bar slid against the railing without catching, and down she went!

"Fuck!"

xxxxx🛡️ Shiver Me Timbers - T1 - Roll To Kick Some Ass

Thank the Maker, there was fighting to be had. Alley had joined whichever of the sloops seemed the most in need of an extra hand, and as soon as there was an enemy ship within boarding range, she was off.

The mace in her hand wasn't from around here, either, crackling with violent red energy as she drew it from her hip and began beating back the pirates trying to prevent boarders. There was a shield bolted to the bar standing in for her arm, and she wasted no time in using it on the offense.

She sounded fucking mad, too, roaring out a proper war cry that echoed out across the water. Come get some!

xxxxx🛡️ Shiver Me Timbers - T1 - No Dice

Of course, all this fighting on uncertain ground was bound to go wrong eventually. The Inquisitor had left a lot of unconscious bodies in her wake, but one bad shift underfoot combined with getting a whole-ass pirate thrown into her back, took her down.

--Just long enough for an enemy to break through the last of her considerable Guard, and sink a blade into her ribs.

xxxxx🛡️ Train Time

The Inquisitor hadn't reacted well to being somewhere new, to be sure. But that reaction had all been silent. Internal. No screaming obscenities; she focused instead on trying to figure out the basics. Why was she here? No idea. How'd she get here? No idea.

Where the bloody fuck had her armor and shield gone?

No idea.

But to an outside observer, Alley was quiet. She lurked near conversations, which was easy enough in such tight quarters. She watched those who spoke up the loudest with slightly narrowed eyes.

And that's how it went for the first week or so on the train. Monosyllabic responses, eloquent grunts. It felt like when she'd woken up in Haven that first time, and her behavior matched that feeling. Observing, waiting, biding her time.

For what?

No idea.

One person had apparently caught her eye at some point during this first week. At first, it was probably due to the usual reasons; maybe they looked like someone she knew; maybe they looked like no one she'd ever seen in her life. Though the initial cause of her interest had to end there, it gave her a focus for her quiet study of the train's inhabitants.

She wasn't super sneaky about it, either. There was literally no room to be subtle, so she didn't bother to try.

Getting Draughty In Here

A

It wasn't the same. The VR headsets, the world he opened his eyes to within, it just wasn't the same without Ai. But, he supposed that was something he was still struggling to get used to. It hadn't been that long ago that he watched his friend vanish. But perhaps that's why he also intentionally chose to play Knight Quest. It was a lot like the game of old, just with better graphics. Maybe even the snarky narrator would be in here. He supposed he would find out if he died and got some shade for it. For now, however, he looked down at himself to see what he had been outfitted with. Hm, a classic tunic and breeches ensemble. He felt the weight of the sword and shield in his hands. This would be interesting and perhaps not using something like LINK VRAINS would do him some good for now.

He heard the sound of someone else joining in on this quest and turned to see who it was. He wasn't too familiar with many of the people on this train, but he was a lot more open about meeting new people than he used to be. He gave them a nod in greeting. "Same quest or are you on your own?"

B

Even Yusaku, who hadn't really played Duel Monsters for fun in years, couldn't resist taking a look at what was in the case. He had his own Cyberse deck on him. He was pretty satisfied with the deck he had, too. So he wasn't really looking to add anything to it, but he was curious all the same. Would there be good cards or bad cards?

He laid them out on a table, eyebrows raising a touch. Wow...

"Weren't some of these cards banned?" After all, over the course of the years since the game had been around, they had had to revamp and change the rules and which cards could and could not be used as newer cards, decks, and different types of play were released to account for all of it. Of course, he wasn't a walking encyclopedia for these cards, so he didn't know all the cards in here in general, let alone all the ones that were forbidden. He rested his chin in his hand, lifting the cards one by one to read. "Mm... I forgot how simple it used to be."

[OOC: I'll match if you want to do brackets, I don't mind. This is tentative as I have a lot going on atm, but I wanted some practice! i. heated debate

There is a very pale man in the middle of the room, towel wrapped around his waist and black lines crawling down his chest from his neck. He seems incredibly uncertain, staring at the tiered bath as though it's a thing that shouldn't exist, holding his towel tightly in place with one hand.

Maybe he shouldn't have accepted the offer of a bath after all. There has to be somewhere else he can go - somewhere less... complicated. A bucket, some water, and a small bit of soap. That's all he needs. Scented oils are for the wealthy, and those who won't be throwing back on old raggedy robes once they're clean.

This is too much. But now he's here. If he walks out it will look as though he didn't want to get clean in the first place, which is simply not true. So he continues to stare at the bath, but doesn't move. He can make it brief, he tells himself. Just in and out. In. Step forward. Just...

ii. getting draughty in here

Wen Ning has a controller in his hands, though currently it's upside-down. He's not sure what to do with it, or how to get the game to work even though he thinks he's turned on the power button. The VR headset is on the floor beside him, untouched.

Perhaps he should try something easier to understand. Like a card came. All of this machinery is beyond him.

iii. shiver me timbers - team two

When one is referred to as the Ghost General in fearful, hushed voices as though saying it too loud might summon him into being, the fear of actual ghosts isn't much of an issue. At least it isn't in Wen Ning's case. Hardly considered human anymore, thriving amidst the resentful energy of the damned, a few restless spirits should be able to be handled without much difficulty.

If that's indeed what they are. He has his doubts.

At the same time, he's thinking that perhaps he might not have been the best choice to be involved in this particular part of the mission. If the crew is already worried about ghosts, then why bring along someone who already appears to be a little cursed?

He keeps his neck covered with a high-collared shirt. It's something they didn't have in his era and its surprisingly comfortable for being so close-fitting. Without it, he's sure he would have been thrown overboard right away.

"Anything?" he asks a teammate as they approach.

He himself has only played a few of the actual console sort of games and definitely not anything where one needs to wear a headset alongside wielding a controller. When Lan Sizhui peeks into the game room, his eyes widen almost comically at the sight of Wen Ning, mouth dropping open with surprise. How many people is this train going to take from his homeworld for immortals' sake? (Too many, it would seem, but he can't deny being happy to see someone he actually knows.)

“Uncle Ning?” comes his soft inquiry as he steps further into the car, head slightly tilted, considering. “You... you're holding it upside-down.” Because what else can he say at the moment?

☪ Team One ☪

Sinking a ship sounded like a lot of work. It was even more work when you were hanging over the railing being pretty consistently seasick. Tyler'd never been on a ship before in his life, and the rocking of the waves weren't treating him very kindly.

Finally, he sank down to the deck, eyes closed as he took a few deep breaths and leaned his forehead against the railing. "I'll be up in a minute," he said when he heard footsteps approach. "I guess I don't have my, what is it, sea legs?" Ships sucked, in his opinion. Especially the smaller ones.

☪ Team Two ☪

Being on the big ship was way better than the smaller ones, and having something to focus on that wasn't sinking other ships helped, too. He'd encountered some weird things before. Okay, one weird thing, but it was still an experience and he liked to think he didn't scare too easily. Which was why he was sitting on the deck in the middle of the night, keeping his eyes peeled for any 'spirits' or weird happenings.

Drumming his fingers on his knee, he looked around again, hair prickling on the back of his neck when he heard a strange sound from below him, in the direction of the hold.

"The shit was that?"

"A-Yuan!" Wen Ning's face brightens, though he doesn't seem to surprised to see Sizhui there. After all, they'd been together at the time of his capture. In a way it's a relief, since if he wasn't here he'd be left to fret over what had happened to him in his absence or wonder if he'd been injured in the process.

He motions for the boy to come sit beside him, patting the spot with one hand. "Come show me, then. There's all these... these knobs?" He flips it over so that the buttons are up top, but also turns it around. It's now right-side-up one way and still upside-down another way. "I heard this would be a fun way to improve my hand-eye coordination." As if that needs improvement.

Gen was far, far sneakier - but he didn't think he had to be. The elf who'd come with the last round of passengers a week or two ago didn't look like she really needed a gentle, subtle touch, exactly. No - she seemed to appreciate a straightforward approach.

Not a threatening one, though. With or without two hands, she looked like she could easily crush Gen into a pretty little smear against the hallway walls.

All the more reason to make friends!

"Hello there," Gen greeted cheerfully, smiling with a wave, innocent as could be. "You were picked up with the last batch, I believe? How are you settling in?"

Zechs looked back, just as unsubtle, once he noticed her looking. It's not as if he enjoyed being watched as if he was dangerous. Granted, that'd be expected where he'd come from. On Earth, or on Mars, he didn't expect anyone to trust him. And he didn't deserve better.

Here, though, he's just not certain what he's done to earn a stranger's ire. Finally, he asked, calm and matter-of-fact as he sat down across from her - "Is there a problem?"

Zechs had definitely caught the elf's attention. Platinum blond hair and bright blue eyes wasn't the most common combination, so he'd reminded her initially of her brother.

But that was where the similarities had seemed to end, and she'd continued to study him because... what the fuck else was she supposed to do on this thing?

"Not really, no," Alley grunted. And then, because the guy hadn't seemed to react with too much surprise to being stared at, "Should there be?"

He wishes he had a bow, but this is the next best thing.]

You ready to go?

Getting Draughty

[The game room is yet another baffling experience. Card games, he knows those, though he's gone through all the decks he can find and hasn't found a single Triple Triad card. Very disappointing.

The video games are a type of magitek he doesn't even want to start with yet, so he's found a game to test his speed.

It's called Odds and Ends, and the goal is to get all the pieces into their slots before time is up. What he doesn't know is that when the timer reaches zero, the game suddenly ejects all the pieces put in.

This happens, and he nearly hits the roof of the carriage in surprise. It's obvious that he was startled--if his expression didn't give it away, his tail being twice it's normal size has--and he glances around to see if anyone else noticed.]

"Us?" Yusaku tilted his head, eyebrow raised. His green eyes didn't see anyone else. That being said, he nodded and pulled out his duel disk (minus the eyeball). There was no deck inside of it currently, that was in the card holder on his belt. He didn't have his dummy deck with him but as he had no need to ever use his Playmaker persona or hide his skills to the other duelists here, he didn't actually need it. "I don't have a way to use it outside of LINK VRAINS."

Then, he looked at the cards again on the table and back at Kaiba.

"I'm not as familiar as others about competitive dueling, I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask." His deck was also not something used in tournaments, considering the Knights of Hanoi did their best to destroy a majority of the cards. Yusaku's deck was literally one of a kind.

"The group of duelists on board," Kaiba clarified, looking at the other strangely. This was the first one not to recognize him...which had interesting implications. That's only confirmed when the disk is clearly not one of his...the structure is only vaguely familiar.

"We're all from different points in time, and even from versions of the world with divergent histories---but we're linked together by the game. Would that disk have an archive of cards from your era, then?"

"Ah," He understood now. The only problem was that he wasn't sure if he really could determine if the others' decks were outdated or not. He had no real point of reference if there are versions of the same world going on here. "I'll need a computer to access the archive. Most people digitize the cards once they get new cards or decks, so everything is stored on it."

Except his deck, anyway. He purposefully always kept a physical deck.

Sizhui's heartbeat jackhammers the moment Wen Ning uses his nickname, a wide, enthusiastic grin momentarily overtaking his expression. The last time he saw his uncle, they'd been seeing Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji off before heading out on their own adventure to honor their ancestors. It was both a bittersweet reunion and a promising goodbye, reassurance they'd all see each other again soon, but with the pledge to branch out afterward.

Without hesitation, he moves closer, sits down beside the older male, reaching to take the controller to flip it right-side-up properly so he can help position his thumbs on the ‘knobs.’ At least he tried and trying is what matters. “It can be, yes, but it takes some getting used to.
