Test Drive Meme 014

Welcome to the Test Drive Meme! Here is the place to see how your character might fit the setting, grab samples and have fun!

1. Post with your character, including their name and series in the subject. We’ve written out some prompts but feel free to make up your own, you have a whole train to play with!

2. Assume they've been around long enough for threads to jump right into the action.

3. Have lots of fun. Mandatory, mod-sanctioned fun.

Happy testing!

Making Music

The latest addition to the train is the Music Carriage, a double-decker space with reasonable acoustics and more tambourines than you can shake a drumstick at.

Upstairs, a small stage in the middle holds a piano, and seating aisles on either side run back to the ends of the carriage and the stairs back down. Curtains and basic stage lighting give some control over the performance space, or act as tools to annoy your fellow 'treckers.

Downstairs, boxes and racks of acoustic instruments up to the size of a guitar litter one side, along with sheet music, manuals, music stands and stools for the budding musician. The other end has several screens set into the wall, through which you can access either a jukebox or an extensive but ecclectic music library from millions of unknown worlds. Your SCA can store up to a hundred tracks for your personal enjoyment, so find your favourites. Or maybe you're the unfortunate soul who found that entire crate of recorders...

Green Fingers

The greenhouse is a surprisingly bright room, its vaulted ceiling made of a transparent, incredibly tough material that shows the light of the Void along the entire length of the room. The single metal support beams is bedecked in roses. The aisle of grass running through the centre of the carriage is riotous with strange plants and flowers, small stone paths leading off to this flowerbed or that.

Usually, this is a fairly calm place to be. Usually, someone hasn't smuggled a bag full of magical seeds back from a mission, and planted them all through the greenhouse. Seemingly overnight, the room has filled with a multitude of strange and wonderful plants. Dare you investigate?

Unplugged

The latest mission has the Voidtreckers in a strangely barren city, its citizens wearing skinsuits, wired gloves and headsets. Just like the ones the dressing car put you all in..? It makes more sense when you turn on the visor and the world comes alive around you. Welcome to Amp Online! The danger this time is in the virtual world overlaid with the physical, as a wave of animal-themed viruses sweep through the cyberscape, destroying livelihoods, and perhaps lives.

Team One
Primarily the fighting is limited to the virtual world. The locals are happy to upload basic combat software into Team One's gear, but the good stuff is locked behind paywalls. Hackable paywalls, definitely, but, luckily, the viruses seem to be dropping something called amp-cred when slain. Which... is apparently money, because the balance in the corner of your vision just ticked up. Time to grind. Wait, are those... limited edition skins?
Team Two
The technicians and sysads insist that the viruses are totally foreign to Amp Online. So... where did they come from? Team Two is tasked with deep-diving into the network, through back-end servers rendered by their gear into dungeon-like labyrinths. The 'monster' viruses are fewer here, but instead, paths are blocked by worms and barrier-like popups. You all have tracking apps and hacking software that looks oddly gamified. Go!
Team Three
Not all threats are online - after a while, a virus manages to follow a link back to the real world, and hijack something. A combat drone, a refridgerator, someone's car... Another follows, and another. Team Three are ejected from Amp Online to troubleshoot in the physical world, protecting data centers and civilian housing stacks from rogue machinery... or their own smart-homes. Ever fought a toaster? Alexa, play Ride of the Valkyries.

"Well! TV's need to be controlled by a remote control! So if we find that we should be able to turn to control it! We won't be able to without it I don't think!"

He knows less about TV's than he does about toasters however. Elfnein's library hadn't had one.
hisblueskies: Blond-haired boy stares 1/4 stage left, neutral expression. ("Really?")

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-19 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Alfredo frowns; that's not good news, far from it, but it's valuable information all the same.

"Let's hope the owner still has this remote, then. Or would any remote do?"

Given the lack of security that had allowed all this technology to be subverted in the first place, maybe that would be enough...

myblueskies: (the world is beautiful!)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-19 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe. I don't know if you can control TV's with different remotes."

Elfnein would know, but she is currently deep diving inside servers. She had told him it would be very different than diving in the ocean and he would be better fighting toasters.

"But we got to find one first before we can try!"
hisblueskies: Blond-haired boy stares slightly off-center, one eyebrow perked. (Eyebrow-raise)

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-19 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Alfredo smiles.

"Right." No putting the cart before the horse here! Wait, were there even any horses ON this world?

It's a few minutes more before they make it to where the TV is running rampant. It appears to be blasting some obnoxious advert (if it was even that; Alfredo looks away quickly, but it's strangely hypnotizing)... and to be travelling on a skateboard, which must also be a device with internet access.

Alfredo can only stare, as the other team members come back to share their intel.

"... Let's go over what we've all found, first. I hope one of you was able to find this device's remote, if not its owner?"

myblueskies: (ark!)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-19 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The skateboard definitely made it trickier! Romeo watched it for a moment before dragging his eyes away at Alfredo's instructions.

"The remote is probably in the house... But what house does it come from?"

There's a lot of houses. This was going to be harder than he thought!
hisblueskies: Blond-haired boy, eyebrows mostly straight with a serious expression. (A Serious Boy)

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-19 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Alfredo opens his mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by one of their other team members proffering the right address.

"No remote, though," they add, sounding annoyed.

"Or rather there was, just smashed."

Alfredo's frown deepens. "Can we... improvise something to disrupt what it's doing? At the least, we need to make it immobile again."

That would reduce its range.
myblueskies: (of course!)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-20 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
"We could knock it off the skateboard." He suggested after a moment. "Or if we could get it into a corner I could trap it!"

That would work, it wouldn't be destroyed but at least it wouldn't make anymore trouble while they figured out what to do!

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-20 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Alfredo briefly looked dubious, but he nodded. If it could be done safely, and with the least damage to Voidtrecker and property alike, then it was the best plan!

"All that's left is to determine how this tee-vee acts - if it runs away from people or towards them."

Right now it was behaving particularly erratically: wanting people to see it, but not to knock it over!
myblueskies: (smile)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-20 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"So we can all run towards it!" He thought quickly, with a grin. "And see what it does!"

That way they would know for certain!
hisblueskies: Blond boy smiles, hand in fist over heart. (Affirming Oath)

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-20 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"... Right," Alfredo said again.

"Everyone still have their magnets?"

After a few affirmations (and sharing of possibly-ill-gotten spares), it was agreed: everyone would pick a seemingly random point to head to, and try to arrange themselves in a circle as quickly as possible.

They'd attracted a few bystanders by this time - or perhaps the TV had? - so quickness was indeed the issue at hand.

"Count of three, then. One, two-"

Alfredo flashed 'three' with his fingers instead.
myblueskies: (so proud of you)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-22 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Romeo quickly got into the circle with the others, holding his magnet. Alfredo was so smart! It never ceased to amaze him! He was as smart as Elfnein even.

Romeo's not even certain how they could have come from the same world as there is so much he doesn't know that Alfredo does!

Alfredo hadn't known what a TV was but here he was with a plan to fight one!

He saw the signal and dived forwards with the others, closing on the TV.
hisblueskies: Blond-haired boy kneeling on a windowsill, perhaps to leap? (Preparing to Spring)

/me blushing at this entire thread on Alfredo's behalf/ Romeo.... //o_o\\

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-22 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Compared to walking alongside gods and elves and beings from other worlds entire... technology shouldn't have seemed so strange to Alfredo.

It still was, though, but he couldn't let that daunt him! People's livelihoods, and perhaps their lives, were at stake!

The TV, meanwhile, did not care about that - first jinking out of the way of one teammate, dodging another's thrown magnet, before finding enough of a hole to head out and away towards an alleyway.

Alfredo threw his magnet, then, with a steady hand - and that one, plus another teammate's, stuck.

"It's still moving!" Alfredo warned, using hand signals to indicate that they should herd it into the alley.

This wasn't over yet!
myblueskies: (they really are delicious apples!)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Let's circle it!" Romeo shouted and then jumped, jumped not like a person but as shinki, leaping over the others to the other side of the TV. "Line!"

He made a borderline in front of him, so that the TV could go no further. Hopefully Alfredo and the others could block it off from the other side!

It was always going to surprise him, seeing Romeo do things humans couldn't.

If he flinched, he'd never admit it, but the team was mostly focusing on the TV anyhow.

The TV, meanwhile, made its irritation known, rocking on its skateboard and turning its volume up to its most annoying.

"Romeo, get out of there!" Alfredo called.

"We can turn it off from over here!" That is, use their magnets on it, which sort of was the same thing, right?
myblueskies: (hope)

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-26 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Romeo looked for a moment like he was going to be stubborn, he could keep the TV here! It was better he stayed and made sure it didn't attack!

But Alfredo knew so much and was really smart. So Romeo just nodded and jumped back over, focusing hard on keeping the borderline up regardless.

He was going to be really tired later!
hisblueskies: Blond boy with candle, smiling (Smile)

Almost time to wrap, you think?

[personal profile] hisblueskies 2020-07-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Once Romeo left the line of proverbial fire, Alfredo gestured for the rest of the team to throw their magnets.

It only took five before the TV's blasts of noise finally gave way to static.

"Romeo... thank you," Alfredo said, serious expression shifting to a relieved smile.

"You really were a great help."

"Woohoo! Let's go get the next one!" someone else shouted. Alfredo once again walked to Romeo's side.

"Let's bring this appliance back home first."
myblueskies: (bittersweet)

yup!

[personal profile] myblueskies 2020-07-27 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Romeo's smile grew even brighter as Alfredo called him a big help. It was a big compliment from someone so smart and good at teamwork! "I wouldn't have been able to do it if it wasn't for your plan! It was amazing!"

He looked at the defeated appliance, "Let's take it back to where it belongs!"

He walked over to the TV, righting it on the skateboard once more. At least they could just push it, rather than trying to lift it.
