Train Questionnaire

Thanks for participating but to protect my sanity, no more questionnaires will be accepted.

Welcome to the Voidtrecker. This is, for better or worse, a new world for all of us and we’re stuck here. In order to detect patterns in these abductions, get important safety information, and other important details for living in this community I’m conducting a survey. Please answer everything to the best of your ability. If you have any questions about the form please consult whoever is standing next to you other than me, because you should be intelligent enough to answer these very straight forward questions.

All information presented here will be kept strictly confidential and the purpose is to collect data.
Please fill it out and deliver it to me, Tony Stark. You'll most likely find me in my lab (aka, the quiet room that has a lock, a 'keep out' sign, and glass painted).

Sorry, but I had some questions about some of your answers here.

[He slowly lowered his muffin and looked at the piece of paper the giant had in his hand. It could have been the thing Madoka had made him fill in or it could have been anything. He didn't know who this guy was to be asking him questions. But more importantly... he really wished he'd not left Madoka's room. And now he was on his own with this strange guy and needing to answer questions. Maru heaved a sigh.]

... This is so bothersome I could die.

[Slowly his shoulders shrugged and he sighed again.]

To start with, why you even submitted it. [Dread adds a shrug to take any censure out of the comment. Not everyone does the questionnaires, and that's fine, but most people who do it have a lot more interest in... actually doing it.]

Madoka said I should.

[It was as simple as that really. He probably wouldn't have if it wasn't for his Eve telling him he should and that it was something Madoka's Dad had worked hard to make.]

Why? Did I fill it out wrong?

You didn't actually answer half the questions and provided basically no useful information. So I'm trying to figure out what was wrong. Apparently you were leaned on.

[Maru lifted a hand to rub the back of his neck and didn't look at the guy.]

Not much to actually tell... Half those questions didn't even make sense to me.

Which ones? Knowing that would help us improve them for the future. [Call Dread skeptical, but he intends to proceed diplomatically.]

[He heaved a heavy sigh.]

Okay. By 'don't make sense' I mean I didn't want to answer.

[Looking at the big guy, Maru frowned.]

Do you wanna tell me all your personal details without knowing who you are?

I don't have any problem with it. [Another shrug of those huge shoulders.] Especially not here. In these circumstances...

[Okay, that was weird... And what circumstances? Sure they'd been scooped up from wherever they'd come from and dumped on a train to nowhere but did that mean everyone should spill the beans and reveal all of their deep, dark secrets?

Maru sighed again and pushed the last of his muffin away.

Slowly he turned around until his legs dropped off of the side of the counter.]

... What did you wanna know?

[At any point, the Echo could kick in, and open up others' histories to him without explanation or control. By that right, being open to others seems only fair.]

Well. You say you're a 'Sevamp'? That isn't a term that's familiar to me.

[sobothersome]

[He...really should have realised that'd be the first question that would be asked of him. Maru didn't look happy with it and he looked away from the giant man]

Servant vampire. It means that. That's what I am.

[Dread nods. That sounds a little alarming, but he's resolved to make no assumptions or judgments.] Your needs as one are being met here? You don't have to give specifics, though if you do it would help us plan for a potential disruption there.

Disruption... [An unhappy frown wrinkles his brow. This was why he didn't like to go into details...

He reached over for half of muffin he hadn't finished and held it up.]

When people don't interrupt me eating, my needs are met. [He hesitated, put the muffin aside and his shoulders slumped.] ... But I don't need blood to live. That's what you really wanna know, right? I've gone hundreds of years without it. I hate it. I don't like drinking blood.

[thebiggestguy]

[Dread shakes his head.] Needs can vary. I'm not assuming. Not assuming is why I'm asking these questions.

Sorry... [He actually did sound apologetic here, his head lowering.]

So far everyone else has assumed. Madoka's dad wanted to murder me. The Green Bastard wanted thought I was some evil blood sucking fiend... [Maru was pretty sure he didn't look evil. And if he was going to go evil... Well, he wouldn't. That seemed to take way more energy than he had.]

I hope they're learning better quickly. We can't make assumptions here. Everyone's so very different. [Dread takes this a bit personally, because the Au Ra have a history of persecution based solely on their appearance. And of course, his wife is one.] I'm sorry for that, and I'll have some worst with people.

You don't have to say anything... it's too bothersome. [He looked up then and gave the smallest of tiny smiles, just a little shift of his lips.] I'm a vampire. Nothing I can do about that. I was made this way...

We don't have a choice in what we are. We have one in who we are.

[Plenty of things are bothersome. Dread doesn't consider this to be among their number. Ask him to mine 18,674 iron nuggets and then see how he feels.]

[Maru thought about that, again his head lowered. Who he was... That was a good question. Who was he? He lifted a hand, chewing absently on the nail of his thumb.]

I guess... Who I am is Maru. It's the name Madoka gave me. Madoka is my Eve, and I'm the Servamp who fights for her. [He looked up then.] I suppose... if you get down to it. I'm a weapon. I'm a weapon she wields. I want to be good though. I don't wanna be a monster... She's helping me to not be one.

If you choose to fight, you're not a weapon. You're a person, making a choice.

That's an important thing, to me. [Dread lifts one hand, curling it into a fist. The runes in his glove flare to bright, white life.] I do a lot of fighting. My wife and I... we've fought things no one else in the world could. But I never forget that I choose to do it, and that keeps me from feeling used, feeling out of control. Feeling like I exist just for that.

I don't like fighting. [Maru replied with a shrug.] But I guess it's what I was created to do... And I fight for my Eve. So they don't have to. To protect what they hold dear.

[He looked down at his hands, they looked normal now, but they could become weapons soon enough... Everything about him, when he was activated, was a weapon. He didn't want to say this guy was wrong when he was being so nice. But it wasn't Maru's choice. In fact, Maru deliberately refused to make the choice. He'd rather someone else make the decisions for him. It was less bothersome that way.]

I was made the way I am.

But... I guess... I'm not as bad as I could be.

That's not a bad choice to make, I think. Fighting so others don't have to.

[Not choosing is a choice of its own. Everything is a choice, even if it doesn't seem like that.]

It's what we're doing on the train, after all. Stepping in to fight, either directly or as part of the big picture.

I suppose that's a way to look at it...

[It was interesting the way this man thought. Putting a positive spin on things just seemed like a bother to Maru. Like it'd take too much energy to do that. But it was alright. And in a way it was also true. He didn't want Madoka to get hurt and have to fight... And since coming on the train there were people he had met who he would have liked to include in on that protection... So maybe he was growing as a person and making choices for himself without even realising he was doing it?]

[Dread looks back down to the paper, eyes flicking over the answers that aren't answers. Truth is, he could ask all of them all over again... but why? He knows and by now Tony knows that no patterns or premises offer themselves out of the data.]
