Let it Snow: OOC Information

The mission start is now live The initial post is for everyone to plan and organise themselves, getting ready for the task ahead, the teams will be quite separated during this mission unlike the last so this post is a good time to play with those in other teams.

Further posts will go up tomorrow (11th January) for each teams mission. There will be a subsequent team post on the 19th January as teams reach their final goals. You are free to put up your own posts on [community profile] middleofsomewhere throughout the event- always make it clear what team mission you are taking part in. There will be a final conclusion post on the 23rd January.

Remember for the plotting and planning only the information in the blockquoted area of this post is available to the characters before their arrival on world – as well as any dreams passengers may have received.

Lay of the Land

World #58291 is a vast one but the mission will predominantly take part in one valley surrounded by mountains. Whatever the land and climate was like before it is now a frozen tundra. The mountains are thick with ice and snow, there is a raging blizzard with a wind that goes right through you. There are times where it is hard to move, there are times where breathing hurts. Those who think about it enough can probably guess that the only reason you are surviving so well here is the SCA.

The valley itself is an ice sheet. Those that can skate will find it easier to move around but the going is treacherous. The mountains surrounding it are deep in snow. The blizzard is fierce, the wind is strong, visibility is low.

Dressing Car

The dressing car is open. They will find team coloured thick winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, water proof trousers, thick boots, ice skates. There are also some waterproof coverings for rucksacks in a variety of sizes.

Technology and Flight

As they can probably guess, this weather isn’t natural and it seems to be having an effect on technology.

In general technology mostly works, but can fault out at any moment. Those whose characters have technological items and use them can chose if and when they want such faults to occur. Technology based on tracking or radar will be more likely to fail than anything else. The SCA is unaffected by this.

Flight however is adversely effected. The military of the world are unable to get over the mountains because of the storm as flying is nigh on impossible. Characters who can fly- either by technological means or their own magical means will find that though they can fly short distances to help a comrade or get out the way of an attack longer flight is not possible. Even if they usually would not be hindered by weather there seems to be something in the storm fighting them. They get turned around, disorientated or sent crashing down.

Weapons and Looting

The valley is home to a small town. It is modern in nature, there are rows of houses, a couple of schools. A market hall. Cars lay abandoned in the street, they will not start. There are some people holed up in the school, sheltering there, others are trapped in their homes but for the most part the town is abandoned.

Those looking for weapons will not find all that much in terms of actual weapons. There are no guns or ammunition, swords or bows. There are household objects that could be used as weapons- knives, bats, spades. With a bit of intuition they will be able to have at least something to hold off the monsters.

The market hall has a large food store, that stocks pretty much what you would expect in a modern supermarket. It also has a couple of clothes stores, it seems the fashion here is wide legged trousers or long skirts and loose shirts, though there are a few other styles of clothing as well.

Peoples houses contain much what you would expect. Many of them are unlocked- the evacuation was very quick, there is still dinner on the table in some houses. Though those from modern worlds will find the houses very similar to what they would expect they will also notice that though these houses have books, games, films none of them are any that they recognise- this world may resemble modern earth but it clear it is not.

Characters are free to loot anything that you would reasonably find in a house. If your character is looting please let me know below.

Creatures

This storm has created creatures of ice. All are made of snow and ice. They do not leave bodies or have blood. Fire damages them a lot, ice attacks will be less effective than usual. Blunt force is a good way of smashing them.

Abominable Snow-beasts: Snow men, snow dogs, snow tigers, snow bears. Any creature that could have a snow statue made of them. But these are very much alive, fast and wanting to kill you. They wield sticks as weapons, throw snowballs hard and fast and are fast moving and numerous.

Ice Golems: Larger than the snow beasts these stand at about eight foot tall, are slow moving and made more of solid ice than snow. Their main purpose seems to be destruction, they throw giant snowballs and their aim is to crush the town and anyone who stands in their way.

Icicles: Mainly a problem in the tunnels and labyrinth, icicles spring from nowhere, sharp as knives. They attack from walls, from ceilings and from the floor. They seems to be at least semi sentient, retreating when attacked, to come up elsewhere. Quickly is the best way to get rid of them.

Snowswirls: The blizzard itself is dangerous but there seems to be something inside it. Every now and again it is like the wind itself is a creature. It will twirl around a person, fire them into the sky, trip them up or trap them in a whirlwind, unable to move.

Liquid Ice: Mostly found in the tunnels and labyrinth. This looks at first to be a trickle of water, strange in a place where everything is frozen. It’s aim is to wrap around a person and turn back into solid ice, trapping them or cutting them with shards. Getting a person free of it without hurting them takes a lot of care!

Routes

Red: Their route is over the mountains, tracking Professor Chill and his gang. The train will drop them at the foot of the mountain. The going is tough, the mountains deep with snow. The SCA has a route and following it will be the safest path. They are likely to come across abominable snow-beasts, ice golems and snow swirls.

Professor Chill has a head start but as long as they keep a steady pace they will gain on him eventually. (The actual confrontation will be part of the final goal thread posted on the 19th January). There is not much shelter in the mountains, the occasional cave, fallen trees. Surviving is going to be as hard as tracking the criminals.

Orange: The train will drop them at the start of the labyrinth which is suspended high in the sky above the valley. Viewed from outside it looks like a large ice box, about the size of a two story house. However once they enter they will learn that it is much larger on the inside. It is sheltered from the blizzard raging outside but still exceptionally cold.

The walls are sheer ice, it is akin to being in a glass maze. The walls look thin enough that they often cannot even see them but they are impossible to break or burn. To make it worse it moves. Panels open below them or close behind them, walls switch around. Areas compact to try and crush them. Pathways turn into slopes, though they will never be expelled from the maze itself. There are icicles that attack from the walls and liquid ice that tries to trap them in place. All the time they can see the weather machine in the middle, it’s just getting to it that will be tricky.

Blue: The majority of people have escaped to the tunnels under the mountains. This is where Blue team must go to try and round them all up and find a safe place to stay. Under the ground there is no blizzard but it is still freezing. Icicles still attack, the ground is frozen and sometimes made of ice.

Many of the tunnels are large, it is clearly a pass that is made for travelling. But other side tunnels are small and require crawling. Many of the townspeople are lost though a few have made makeshift camps. They are low on supplies and it may be that some of the Blue team need to go and gather more from the town.

The tunnel network is large and hard to navigate, luckily there is a map on the SCA but it only shows where they themselves are, not any others.

Purple: Purple team remain in the valley to protect the town from the onslaught of monsters. Ice golems and snow beasts are swarming the town. There are people trapped some of the houses and others who were not able to flee in time holed up in the school.

The monsters seem to form in the shadow of the labyrinth in the centre of the town and then spread outwards. The golems seem to be most focussed on destroying the town itself whereas the snow-beasts are out to attack any people. Hold out and protect the town until orange team find a way to stop the machine.

By his virtue, Lan Wangji doesn't loot. On the final day before they board the train and the mission is complete, Lan Wangji may find a way to pay for the food in the market hall with the world's currency. Probably pay for the clothes too. He's stocking up food/drinks as he's going to need a lot of food to prepare to cook for an upcoming birthday/new year gathering that he wanted to hold on the train.

Speaking for his family:

Sizhui's loot: neat rocks, rabbits, vegetables and flowers if he can find them.

Wei Wuxian's loot: Booze, liquour, spirits, etc.
