To Climb: Event Start
Our first mission event is now live! The post can be found here. If you want to interact with an NPC just post under their top level, this can be later on in the event as well as the arrival- just write out an appropriate starter. Otherwise the post can be used for characters exploring and planning for their missions etc. Feel free to start your own posts on the event board and if your character gets up to any real mischief let me know! Characters are free to start their missions whenever they wish and until they depart will enjoy hospitality at the inn. The inn is large and there are enough rooms for everyone to have one each if they wish.
Lay of the land.
Though it is at the foot of Ciyesia the ‘Weary Wanderer’ is by no means in the low lands. It is primarily surrounded by forest though there are a couple of roads and tracks leading down through the hills as well as they railway which winds it’s way down through the hills. Anyone who wished to do any long range exploring would discover it is about half a days walk to the next inhabited area, a cluster of farmsteads where the forest gives way to fields.
The way up the mountain also starts in forests. There are clearly defined paths and some more overgrown routes. Most of the trees are tall and large, making the forest floor quite dark and shaded. Wildlife is what you might expect from high up in a place with a generally warm climate.
As the paths wind higher the trees give way to scrubland. Grazing animals are seen a plenty- goats, sheep and antelope primarily. There are a few streams running down the mountain, a couple of large ones near the farmer tracks.
Nearer the top of Ciyesia the air gets thinner, nowhere bad enough to be dangerous but enough to give pause to those not used to such altitudes. The final approach is rougher, paths become less defined until it becomes a crag. The last hundred meters is a climb whichever route you take.
The summit itself is dry and and dusty with large pillars of rick, the nesting place of dralite.
Creatures
Forest
Dralite: The chicks can be found in the forests, normally in clutches of two or three. As chicks they are about the size of a beach ball, however it soon becomes apparent that they are predominantly made of wings. Unfurled the creature is tiny with massive wings, spanning a meter long each. It is obvious why they need an escort, they cannot yet fly and their movement is severely hampered by their disproportionate wing size. They will happily cling to any friendly creatures.
On the summit there are adult dralite. These are about the size of a sheep with large wings and large claws. They are teritorial but not overtly hostile unless provoked.
Dralite have a screech that will floor most creatures, knocking them down disoriented. As chicks their screech will stun, giving them time to escape from danger.
Monkeys: In the forest there are many creatures but the ones to be concerned about are the monkeys. They aren’t violent but they are mischievous and hold little fear of anything. They will throw rocks or try and take off with anything they can pilfer.
Scrublands
Horn-crowned Goats: In the scrublands there are plenty of goats, sheep and antelope but one breed of goats stands out. Instead of regular howns they have a crown of bone spikes and if you are close enough to see that then they are probably already charging at you. They are bad tempered and will attack practically on sight. It is obvious why they are causing problems for farmers in the area.
Great chinchillas
Soft, very fluffy and the size of a Yorkshire Terrier. Unlike the earth-based species you know these creatures are predators. They can jump distances of ten to twelve feet, their teeth are sharp and they hunt in packs. They plague the farmer tracks and feed off any lambs and kids that they can cut off from the herds. If you get close to one you will see dark ripples in their fur, dark shadows that seem to be coming from within the creatures themselves.
Crag
Eagle Owls
A parliament of five eagle owls have made their nest in the crag at the top of Ciyesia. These are even larger than regular eagle owls, standing at about a meter tall they will happily try and carry off a grown human or a sheep. They are an obstacle to reaching the summit though not an overt hostile.
Armoured gorilla
Clearly more than an ordinary gorilla. Parts of its fur are almost scale like, providing armour. It is strong, has large claws and is very intelligent and cunning. It will attack anyone it sees as a threat or those impeding on its territory.
Routes
The train symbol on their SCA is green again but if they press it they will once again be able to read the mission briefs and also see a map showing the routes up the mountain (colour coded for convenience).
Red
The map shows a very straight forward route upwards. It clears the forest quickly and is tough going. Many parts require scrambling up rocky steep inclines. As they reach the summit they will find the trek more resembles climbing than walking.
Though they may meet some horn crowned goats on the trek their way is mostly clear until they get near the summit. There they will have to climb the crag whilst fending off a parliament of eagle owls. Once on the summit they face the ‘hostile’ to take care of. A very angry gorilla- or at least a creature that looks like one. It is currently in the midst of a territory fight with a small flock of dralite. It seems to be winning and it won’t take kindly to new threats on his mountain.
Purple
This route takes you directly through the forest before joining onto the herder track that criss-crosses the western side of the mountain. Parts are difficult to traverse. A couple of rivers to cross, slopes to scramble up. It is definitely easier to travel in a group and work out ways together past the obstacles.
There are grazing animals aplenty. Some are under attack by horn-crowned goats or great chinchillas. Clearing them will take a joint effort as will keeping the ordinary animals out of harms way.
The track comes to an end near the summit where it is a scramble to the top. Eagle owls may still be a problem but hopefully Red Team have dealt with the situation with the armoured gorilla…
Orange
There are smatterings of orange dots on the map showing the locations of the plants to be gathered. The forest is relatively safe, the monkeys more nuisance than danger. As explained in their brief the trees of Purple Stars are tall with limited branches and Fruit Cups grow alongside spider bushes so planning ahead is essential.
Once the plants are gathered the path is a gentler one up the mountain. It sometimes crosses with the farmer tracks but hopefully purple team will have cleared it of hostile creatures. There may still be a chance of meeting a horn-crowned goat or a great chinchilla so be careful. Be also careful of the eagle owls on the final approach and hope the red team have cleared the summit for your.
Blue
The map shows clusters in the forests where dralite chicks can be found. They are friendly things once you prove to not be a threat and will wrap their wings around your shoulders, glad for a ride up the mountains.
The journey through the forest will be the hardest part, the monkeys are likely to scare the dralite and make them screech, which won’t be great for anyone. Once the forest is cleared the way is smooth with limited scrambling until the very top. Hopefully you should meet very few hostile creatures. Truthfully the hardest part will be keeping the dralite happy. They are friendly and playful, like chasing bugs, will wrap their wings tight (often around your face) whenever they are scared and will screech if threatened or they don’t get their own way. In many ways it is like escorting a very grouchy, sonic powered toddler up a mountain…
Provided the gorilla has been dealt with the dralite adults will be happy to be reunited with their chicks and will make you an offering of dead mice as a thank you.
