Kamijou Touma | To Aru Majutsu No Index

Library

Since arriving on the train, Touma had found himself with far more free time on his hands than he has ever had back in Academy City. Most teenagers his age would probably use this free vacation to laze about or indulge in their favorite activates without having to worry about their previous responsibilities. Touma knew better. Once this whole journey was over, he will be returning back home. He was certain of it. And when that happened, the reality of his horrible school attendance and shitty grades will be waiting for him.

The possible of having to repeat a grade sent shivers down his spine.

Thus, in order to prevent this awful future, he was currently roaming the library in search of any books that could help him study. Or at least, that was the plan. His optimism started to slowly give way to despair as he examined the bookshelves. To his horror, most were devoid of any literature whatsoever and the one that did have something on their shelves only had fiction.

Things were starting to look grim until he noticed there was another person in the library. Feeling desperate, he walked up to them in hopes of gaining them as a potential ally in securing his future.

"Excuse me! Could you help me? I'm having trouble finding the books I need and most of the shelves are empty."

Prime Directive: Team Three

Gripping the joystick tightly in his hand, Touma focused all his attention on the monitor above him. It currently displayed an otherworldly night sky filled with vibrant dark blues and purples as if it was meticulously brushed on by a talented painter. Several twinkling lights could be seen streaking across the sky, leaving behind a trail of blueish dust and gas. Unfortunately for him and everybody else, those lights were not something to admire. They were the shattered remains of the former moon known as Ej and were currently on a destructive crash course with the planet.

A meteorite about 20 meters had enough kinetic energy to exceed an atomic bomb. Smaller meteorites weren't as destructive, but still had the potential to cause unneeded deaths. It was for this reason why he was currently occupying an A.E.G.I.S, a machine dedicated to handling the current bombardment of deadly space debits. Any meteorite that survived atmospheric entry could be harmlessly tossed right back into the void of space.

Thankfully, the controls were relatively user friendly. All he needed to do was move the joystick to aim the reticle on-screen and pay attention to any instructions given by the on-board AI. He didn't know how easy the other controls for adjusting the gravitational inversion levels were, but he suspected it couldn't be that bad. The natives wouldn't have allowed complete amateurs to pilot such life-saving equipment if the controls weren't designed to be intuitive.

It also helped he was pretty decent at shoot-em-ups.

His heart nearly bust out of his chest when a bright red 'WARNING' suddenly began to flash across the screen while an obnoxious blaring noise accompanied it.

"Numerous objects inbound for impact. All pilots ready themselves to engage the threat." The AI stated in a monotone voice.

"Get ready!" Touma shouted towards his partner. "We can't let a single one slip by!"
