If Essek tried to bargain or plead the case of another one of the group (it's Caleb, we know he's talking about Caleb) say that Essek coerced him into participating against his will, could he take on Caleb's punishment or get them released sooner? Essek is very convincing and diplomatic, he would be willing endure the full brunt of two people's worth of punishment and/or to put his life on the line if it would spare Caleb.
