Joscelin’s eyes go wide behind their glasses. “Two weeks ago?” He echoes incredulously. “My dear friend, that simply cannot be. I have been on this godforsaken train at least six months, and for a year before that I wasn’t even in the same version of earth as our shared reality.”

He can’t even remember what he and Jean-Claude had spoken about, the last time he’d seen him.
